Saint-Alban combines traces of the Middle Ages with views over the Cerdon Valley. The remains of the former Saint-Alban church stand on a rocky outcrop above the valley. From the former church site, you can see Cerdon, the vineyards and the Culaz waterfall.
Church, Priory and Historic Traces
The Saint-Alban priory complex was built in the 12th century. The Château de Jean de la Balme in Mortaray dates from 1376. The ruins of the medieval Château de Bôches are associated with the Thoires family. The historic landmarks therefore range from a dated construction history to a family connection. The priory complex was built more than a century before the Château de Jean de la Balme, which dates from 1376.
Brewery and Wine Experiences
Brasserie Grange Noire in Saint-Alban makes beers from pure malt. They are neither pasteurised nor filtered, and undergo secondary fermentation on the lees in the bottle. Visitor options include direct sales, tours and tastings by prior arrangement.
Domaine de l’Eperon is located on a rocky spur above Cerdon and the Ain Valley. Tastings of two sparkling Cerdon rosé cuvées made from Gamay and Poulsard are offered in the tasting room; white and red wines are also available. Visits are possible by advance reservation only.
Balades Apéro Sunset Dînatoire is offered at an address in Saint-Alban; the experience itself consists of self-guided walks through the Cerdon vineyards, followed by an evening at a pop-up bar with views of the sunset. For the 2026 season, the offer includes three beginner-friendly routes, each lasting 45 minutes. It also includes three wines produced by Daniel and a platter of charcuterie and cheese. The seasonal programme and menu details may change; check the specific offer in advance. When choosing between the wine experiences, the format is also a key factor: Domaine focuses on tastings in the tasting room, while Balades combines a walk with an evening afterwards.
Hiking and Climbing
The Circuit des vignes Ă Cerdon starts in Cerdon and is a moderately difficult 7.4-kilometre circular hiking trail. It leads to the ruins of the former Saint-Alban church. Check the route details before setting out. For the Circuit, distance and difficulty provide a guide; for Balades, the beginner-friendly routes and their 45-minute duration are the key points of comparison.
The Saint-Alban climbing crag has routes for different ability levels. Climbing thus adds an activity that differs from a circular hike or a walk.
