Massieux can be explored through three distinct travel highlights: the Romanesque Saint-Barthélemy Church, the 14-kilometre towpath along the Saône and the Voie Bleue long-distance cycling route. If you are planning a stay, you can first consider whether local history, a longer walk or cycling is your main interest. The area is also defined by its geographical position between the Saône and the Dombes.

Between the Saône and the Dombes

To the west, the area around Massieux borders the Saône. The Grand Rieu stream forms the natural boundary to Genay and the Rhône département in the south. To the east, Massieux opens onto the Dombes plateau. The description of the area thus combines specific boundaries to the west and south with a landscape connection to the east.

Church and local history

The Romanesque Saint-Barthélemy Church dates from the 12th century and was restored in the 19th century. The restoration came after the church was built, so the church can be understood in terms of both its medieval origins and its later history. For travellers interested in architecture and local history, it is a specific cultural point of interest.

Another historical detail concerns the lordship of Massieux: around 1176, it was under the authority of the lords of Villars. This is a different aspect from the history of the church. Saint-Barthélemy represents the history of the building and its restoration, while the reference to Villars concerns the lordship at the time.

On foot and along the Voie Bleue

The 14-kilometre towpath along the Saône is one of the popular walking routes among Massieux residents throughout the year. Conditions may vary by season for visitors. At this length, it is more of a route to plan for deliberately than a short walk along the way—a useful point of reference if you would like to combine your stay with a longer walk.

For cycling, the Voie Bleue, Moselle-Saône à vélo, covers a different scale. It is a 700-kilometre cycling route, included in the national cycling route network under the code V50, and connects the Luxembourg border with Lyon. In the area of the Communauté de communes Dombes Saône Vallée, it follows the route from Fareins to Massieux. Motorised traffic is heavily restricted on the Voie Bleue.

Improvement works were carried out in 2022 and 2023 on the Voie Bleue towpath between Massieux and Fareins to make it easier for cyclists and pedestrians to get around. In Massieux, there is a bicycle repair and tyre-pumping station on the Voie Bleue. A boat-launching ramp on the Voie Bleue has also been renovated.

Bus service and travel planning

Bus route 184 is another useful transport option: it connects Neuville-sur-Saône and Trévoux and serves the following stops in Massieux: Barrage, Genetière, Zone activité, Simply Market and Bascule. If you plan to take the bus, check the timetable before travelling.

When choosing a stay in Massieux, the difference between the routes is practical: the towpath is a walking option, while the Voie Bleue is a long-distance cycling route. Consider whether you would rather explore on foot or make cycling the focus of your trip. This can help you choose the kind of trip you want without treating the two options as the same type of tour.
