Curciat-Dongalon offers several reasons to visit: historic mills, festivals with their own dates, and fishing waters. These themes offer different points of focus. You may be interested in local history and architecture, planning a stay during a festival weekend, or finding out about local fishing opportunities. The mills tell the story of their former use and showcase different architectural features; the festivals combine specific dates with food and community events.

Mills: History, Architecture and Location

The Moulin de la Galope is considered the oldest mill in the village of Curciat-Dongalon. It was probably built in the 18th century and operated as a grain mill until 1940. Its history can be traced to two specific details: its probable period of construction and its former use for grinding grain. The Moulin de la Galope is on the “la Farandole des Moul'Ain” tourist trail.

The Moulin des Vernays is also on this trail. Its architecture stands out in particular: the mill consists of elongated brick-and-timber-framed buildings. It can only be viewed from the outside. The two mills therefore differ in what makes them special: the Galope is notable for its recorded history and former milling operations, while the Vernays is distinguished by its buildings and the view from outside.

The Moulin de Fuseret offers a different geographical setting. It is on the Sâne Vive and along the road between Saint-Trivier-de-Courtes and Saint-Nizier-le-Bouchoux. The three mills therefore appeal to different interests: the history of milling, architecture, or a location beside a river and road. These differences can help you decide what to focus on during your visit, without treating the mills as interchangeable stops.

Festivals with Different Dates and Traditions

The Banquet des classes et les matefaims traditionally takes place on the first weekend in March. The program includes a procession from the town hall square to the war memorial, accompanied by the Union musicale brass band. On the following Sunday afternoon, crĂŞpes are made for visitors to try. If you plan to visit for this festival, check the dates and schedule for the current edition in advance.

The FĂŞte de l'andouillette is traditionally scheduled for the first weekend in July. Andouillettes are cooked in wood-fired ovens and served at tables under a festival tent. The festival therefore combines a specific culinary focus with a regular place in the annual calendar; check the current dates and arrangements before your trip. Admission to the Vide-grenier de la Varna is free for visitors. Here too, it is advisable to check the current event arrangements.

The FĂŞte de la pĂŞche combines a fishing competition with carp goujonnettes. Check the current dates and program for this event before planning your trip around it. The three events therefore differ both in theme and in how food features in them: andouillettes take center stage at the July festival, crĂŞpes are part of the Banquet des classes et les matefaims weekend, and carp goujonnettes accompany the fishing competition.

Fishing Waters and Practical Information

Curciat-Dongalon has two fishing waters designated as “plans d’eau fédéraux,” managed by the local fishing association. This classification offers anglers a specific starting point, but does not replace checking the current rules: find out about the applicable conditions before fishing. Do not infer opening hours or unrestricted access from this information.

L'étang du Pont de la Varna is a 2-hectare pond. Check the current access and fishing rules before visiting. This keeps local history, festival dates and fishing clearly distinct as reasons for planning a trip. Whether you are more interested in the mills, a particular festival or a fishing spot, plan around the topic that suits you and confirm time-sensitive details before departure.
