Château d’Ansouis: Gardens and Building History
The terraced gardens of Château d’Ansouis overlook the Vallée d’Aigues; the estate also offers panoramic views. The historic complex includes the remains of the fortification walls and the square tower. The château and park, including these features, were classified as historic monuments by decree on 10 May 1948. This brings two distinct aspects together: views across the valley and the architectural traces of the fortifications. Depending on your interests, both the views and the building history may play a part in planning your visit.
Église Saint-Martin: An Architectural Detail
The parish church, Église Saint-Martin, offers a different architectural focus. It was classified as a historic monument by decree on 24 October 1988; the semicircular porch is included. For the château, the classification also covers the park, remains of the fortifications and square tower, while at Saint-Martin the focus is on the porch. This makes it possible to compare different scales: a historic complex with several included features and a specific detail of the church. The classifications also date from different years: 1948 and 1988.
Musée extraordinaire: Corals, Shells and Fish
The Musée extraordinaire displays a collection of corals, shells and fish assembled by Georges Mazoyer over 40 years. Unlike the buildings, the focus here is on collection items; the lengthy collecting process is also part of the collection’s history. This gives the museum a different subject from the château and church. If you are interested in nature as well as architectural history and the story of a collection, the Musée extraordinaire offers a distinct point of interest.
The Sunday Market
The weekly market takes place every Sunday morning at the foot of the village, on Place de la Vieille Fontaine. During the warmer months, the offerings include fresh fruit and vegetables, prepared foods, local products and other goods. Two details are important for planning: Sunday morning is the regular market time, while this selection is tied to the warmer months. If the seasonal offerings are especially important to you, keep both in mind when choosing when to visit. If you want to include the market and a guided tour in the same stay, check their dates separately.
Guided Tours: Plan Separately for the Château and Village
The château can only be visited on a guided tour and with an advance reservation. Also check the seasonal visiting arrangements before your trip. Ansouis Patrimoine offers guided tours of the village of Ansouis in partnership with the Office de Tourisme Sud Luberon. They resume in spring and are offered twice a month until October; check the current dates before your trip. The two types of tour require different planning: a guided tour and reservation are mandatory for the château, while the village programme depends on finding a suitable date within its seasonal schedule. If you want to include both in your stay, take these requirements into account separately.
