Venasque brings together a baptistery dating from the late 6th century, a painting from the Avignon school and trails through a striking rocky landscape. There are also climbing areas and viewpoints overlooking Mont Ventoux. Venasque also bears the “Plus Beaux Villages de France” label. Your stay can therefore combine different interests: cultural history in the town, a circular hike with a stated distance, and a route defined by its landscape.

Cultural history at specific sites

The Baptistère de Venasque was built at the end of the 6th century and altered in the 12th century. The two dates mark different phases of construction. France’s 1840 heritage protection list classifies the building as a historic monument. Admission is free; visitors can access the first apse and enjoy an overall view of the three other apses.

The Eglise Notre-Dame de Venasque houses a painting of the Crucifixion dating from 1498, attributed to the Avignon school. The Chapelle du Prieuré Saint Pierre de Venasque offers a different historical perspective: it was built between the 12th and 13th centuries at a former Celtic place of worship. After falling into disrepair, the chapel was restored between 1986 and 1993. The painting offers a precisely dated connection to art; the former place of worship and the later restoration are both part of the chapel’s history.

Hiking and rocky landscapes

The “V09 Venasque et le passage de l'Ascle” route is a 4.8-kilometre circular hike that starts in Venasque. It is rated easy; the stated duration is about 1 hour and 45 minutes. One distinctive section is the Passage de l'Ascle, which looks like a large staircase carved into the rock.

Another route passes limestone cliffs, a fairy chimney, a dry-stone hut and the Ermitage de Saint-Gens; it also offers views of the Vaucluse Massif. The two trails have different highlights: the V09 provides orientation through its circular layout, distance and approximate duration, while the route by the Ermitage is described through its rock formations and views. This lets you compare a clearly quantified circular hike with a route characterized by its landscape.

For climbing enthusiasts, the Saint Pierre and Place de l'Ascle sectors are identified in Venasque. Signage at the climbing areas provides information about parking and nearby climbing areas. Alongside the hiking trails, these dedicated climbing areas can therefore be a focus in their own right.

Getting your bearings and your stay

You can explore Venasque using eight interpretive panels. Numerous viewpoints offer views of Mont Ventoux. The panels and viewpoints provide different kinds of orientation: one explains the town, while the other directs your gaze towards the mountain.

When looking for a hotel in Venasque, it helps to first decide what kind of stay you want. Are you most interested in cultural history and art, a circular hike, the landscape or climbing? These interests can guide your search without requiring you to combine the different activities into a fixed daily itinerary.
