Le Flayosquet is one of Draguignan’s historic hamlets. When planning your trip, you’ll find several distinct themes here: the early history of Sainte-Marie du Flayosquet, the Moulin du Flayosquet olive mill, and routes for cyclists. These themes address different questions: What historical details define the place? What does a visit to the mill involve? And what demands do the cycling routes pose? This lets you balance culture and activities according to your interests, rather than treating them as a single itinerary.

Church History and Exhibitions

Sainte-Marie du Flayosquet stands in the hollow of the Florièye, on the slope of a small tufa hill. The first building is dated to the beginning of the 9th century, though it may date back to the 8th century. The date therefore remains uncertain, preserving the distinction between an approximate period and a precise year. Archaeological finds also give the site a concrete historical dimension: seven graves were identified in the middle and eastern parts of the nave. They have triangular cross-sections and brick-coffin-style surrounds. The dating, location within the nave and grave form describe different aspects of the building and burial history.

The Chapelle du Flayosquet hosts exhibitions from time to time. From January 1 to December 31, visits are subject to arrangements that depend on the exhibitions. The exhibition program may change, so check the arrangements for your visit date in advance. This lets you plan this part of your trip around the specific exhibition conditions.

An Olive Mill Tour and Tasting

The Moulin du Flayosquet, also known as Le Bastidon, is an olive mill dating from the 13th century. During a guided tour, you can see a seven-meter-diameter water wheel; the tour ends with a tasting of regional products in the mill shop. The visit thus brings together two specific elements: the large wheel as a technical feature and regional produce. If, alongside architectural and archaeological history, you’re looking for a culinary focus, the mill offers another way to explore the hamlet’s history.

Cycling Routes and Conditions

For cycling trip planning, La Méditerranée à vélo provides a precise route description: on the D57, the route runs for three kilometers in the direction of Le Flayosquet, then turns onto Chemin du Seyran and follows it for another 3.5 kilometers. The route also includes a dangerous crossing and narrow roads. Take these conditions into account when planning, and check the road conditions before setting out. The directions, turn-off and distances help you identify the section described.

However, the distance alone does not tell you how physically demanding the route is. The east-west section of La Méditerranée à vélo has several long climbs of 10 to 15 percent; cyclists carrying luggage often have to push their bikes there. This highlights the difference between route guidance and physical demands: the D57 and Chemin du Seyran section describes the route, while the gradients and luggage are relevant to assessing the ride.

The Les balcons du Haut-Var – Circuit 6 loop also reaches Le Flayosquet, then climbs via the D57 and D49 towards Ampus. Circuit 06 passes through the hamlet, which has a Roman necropolis. In the département, the Naturalistes du Flayosquet et de Provence organize geological excursions. This gives geology enthusiasts another point of interest at the département level, in addition to Le Flayosquet’s architectural, funerary and milling heritage.

When choosing what to focus on, it’s worth considering the conditions for each activity separately: at the chapel, the exhibition program matters; at the mill, the tour content; and on the cycling routes, the specific route, including gradients and road conditions. This lets you tailor your trip to your interests and preferred activities.
