Fossils and minerals, a museum-gallery in a former chapel, historic mills and views stretching to the Mediterranean: Bargemon brings together a variety of discoveries in a compact area. When planning your visit, you can therefore explore the town from several perspectives—from collections and architectural history to activities at the Col du Bel Homme.

Museums: from fossils to typewriters

The Musée des Fossiles & Minéraux has nearly 3,000 fossils and mineral specimens, many of them from the region. A remarkable find from Canjuers, above Bargemon, is also featured: the museum displays a dinosaur specimen discovered there. The collection thus connects the history of local finds with a broader look at fossils and minerals.

The Musée de la Mécanographie focuses on something quite different. Its typewriter section includes around 100 items and spans more than a century. Anyone interested in the history of technology and collecting will find a subject here that contrasts with the geological focus of the fossil and mineral museum.

Chapels, churches and the history of Bargemon

The Musée-Galerie Honoré Camos is housed in the former Chapelle Saint-Etienne, dating from the 11th century. Its presentation of Bargemon’s history covers its religious heritage, economic activities, local figures and the painter Honoré Camos. Art, local history and the building’s former use come together here.

The Chapelle Notre-Dame de Montaigu also has several historical connections. It was built in the early 17th century as a chapel for the White Penitents and was named Notre-Dame de Montaigu in 1635, after a miracle was recognized. It is also part of Bargemon’s defensive system and is attached to a former town gate. The chapel hosts rotating exhibitions throughout the year, featuring contemporary artists or thematic displays; the programme may change.

The parish church of Saint-Etienne is a separate building: its construction began in 1400 and ended in 1427, the year it was consecrated. The different buildings therefore tell not one single story of construction, but lead visitors through different periods and functions. In the town centre, the “ronde des musées” also passes fountains and shady squares.

Mills and regional produce

The mills offer further points of interest, from architectural history to tastings. The municipal Moulin du Pré du Conduit was built towards the end of the 18th century on the foundations of a grain mill. Its stone mill is still in operation.

The Moulin de Bargemon offers guided tours in English and French during shop opening hours, with no advance booking required. The Moulin à huile du XVIIIe siècle offers olive oil tastings. As opening hours and service information can change, check the latest visitor details before planning your visit.

Views and outdoor activities at the Col du Bel Homme

The Col du Bel Homme offers views of the Mediterranean and the Maures and Esterel mountain ranges. The pass is used by cyclists, walkers and people who enjoy free flight. Different ways to get active and spend time outdoors come together here, with the views providing a shared landscape to enjoy.

An orientation table at an altitude of 1,032 metres can be reached from the Col. It is not necessarily located at the pass itself. Another specific local point of interest is the “Les villages perchés de l'Est varois – Circuit 09” circular route: its section in Bargemon runs from the Place Moreri car park towards the town centre.
