Entrecasteaux brings together historic buildings, circular trails and a variety of culinary themes. For a getaway, you can choose a focus: architecture and gardens, a hike or a circular horse-riding route, the Friday market, or produce such as honey, pollen and olive oil.
History in the town and the garden
The Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-l'Aube dates from the 12th century and is classified as a Monument historique. The classification was registered on 25 March 1980. Château d'Entrecasteaux is also partly protected as a Monument historique. Together, the chapel and château give the cultural theme a clear historical focus, although they are protected to different extents.
The Jardin du Château d'Entrecasteaux offers a different perspective: this French-style garden is inspired by drawings by Le Nôtre. It is open to the public, free of charge, and can be explored independently; dogs are not allowed. If you plan to visit the garden, check the visiting conditions in advance, as access arrangements may change.
The Glacière is also located near the château. This rare, round building served as a refrigerator for the château's lords and their guests. Its unusual shape and former cooling function offer a different theme from the chapel, château and garden. For anyone interested in the practical functions of historic buildings, it adds a detail of its own to the town's history.
Choose circular trails by activity and difficulty
Three circular trails start in Entrecasteaux, differing in activity, length and difficulty. Les colles is an easy 4.7-kilometre hiking trail. Le Défens de Valpeironne is also a hiking route, but at 7 kilometres it is of moderate difficulty. La ronde des châteaux is an easy 48-kilometre circular horse-riding route. This gives you two hiking routes and a much longer route on horseback to choose from.
A direct comparison of the two hiking routes makes the differences clear: Les colles is 2.3 kilometres shorter than Le Défens de Valpeironne and is rated easy rather than moderate. La ronde des châteaux differs not only in length but also in activity. You can choose based on whether you prefer hiking or horse riding, and which distance and difficulty level suits you best.
Market and local produce
The market in Entrecasteaux takes place every Friday, whatever the season. If you choose a Friday for your stay, you can make the market a regular fixture in your weekly plans. Château du Grand Jas offers guided tastings of AOP Côtes de Provence rosé and white wines at the vineyard. The winemaker welcomes guests and conducts the tastings in French and English. The family-run vineyard has been in operation since 1896. As visiting arrangements may change, it is advisable to confirm the tasting in advance.
The Miellerie des Moulières in Entrecasteaux produces honey and pollen and offers tours, tastings and direct sales. The Coopérative Oléïcole La Solidarité in Entrecasteaux also produces and sells a product: olive oil. The two offers have different focuses. At the Miellerie, tours and tastings are part of the experience; at the Coopérative, the focus is on producing and selling olive oil.
