If you are planning an overnight stay in Neoules, you can distinguish between cultural and natural attractions by focusing on specific places. The castle and church are highlights of the town’s history; Font Marcellin is a small, sensitive natural area, while the hike to Pilon Saint-Clément takes a whole day. This makes it easier to decide in advance whether historic buildings, wetland species or a day-long hike with scenic views should be the deciding factor.

Castle, Church and Châteauloin

The Château de Néoules was built or rebuilt in 1584 by François Blancard, a co-lord of Néoules. It stands opposite the Church of Saint Jean-Baptiste and has four round towers and a central courtyard. The builder, date and architecture each offer a distinct point of reference for exploring local history.

The church’s history can also be traced through specific dates: Saint Jean-Baptiste was built in 1528 and enlarged in 1567. On 24 August 1578, it became the parish church of Néoules, replacing a priory that had existed since 1015. The dates mark different stages: the construction of the church, its enlargement and, later, its assumption of the role of parish church.

Châteauloin comprises a 10th-century tower and a 19th-century sheepfold surrounded by oak trees. The site thus brings together two periods of construction that are far apart in time.

Châteauloin and the Festival de Néoules

The 2026 edition of the Festival de Néoules once again took place over three days on the grounds of Châteauloin, in a friendly, festive and multigenerational atmosphere. The program included numerous artists, a market featuring craftspeople and creative makers, artistic performances and live-painting demonstrations. Dates vary from one edition to the next; if you are planning to attend the festival in a particular travel year, check the dates for that edition.

Font Marcellin and the Hike to Pilon

Font Marcellin is a 0.3-hectare sensitive natural area near the village. It is managed by the Var Department and serves as a refuge for biodiversity. The educational pond and watercourse are among the area’s defining features and are associated with typical wetland species.

These species may thrive there, find refuge or simply pass through the area. Examples include the red-veined darter, the little bittern and the brown trout. The different possibilities—thriving, finding refuge or passing through—are part of Font Marcellin’s ecological character.

The hike to Pilon Saint-Clément requires different planning: it takes a full day and starts at the Ferrage car park in Néoules. A totem at the entrance marks the starting point. The route follows tracks and paths through the garrigue to a ridge with 360-degree panoramic views of the sea and the Maures and Sainte-Baume massifs. On a clear day, the view also extends to the Alps. Set aside a full day for this hike.

Public Transport and Market Offerings

The Font Marcellin stop is served by routes on the Zou regional transport network as well as Mouv’enbus routes. Routes and timetables may change, so check the current schedule before travelling.

A description dated 29 November 2023 of the Bon p’tit marché hebdo de Néoules lists fruit and vegetables, rotisserie chicken, artisan bread, cade, local honey and oriental pastries. If you are planning to visit the market, check the current market days and stalls in advance.
