Saint-Jean-Saint-Nicolas can be explored through specific cultural and natural themes: from the Médiathèque and historic chapels to trails with different points of interest. When planning, the key is choosing what suits you: literature and events, local history, a guided museum visit or a challenging ascent each offer a different way to experience the place.

Culture and Local History

The municipal Médiathèque offers year-round collections, services and events for children and adults in a 185 m² space. Each year, it also takes part in “Partir en livre,” a summer festival held outside the library and dedicated to children’s and young adult literature. Dates vary, so check them for your travel period.

The Musée du moulin has five themed rooms across 400 m², where you can discover the Champsaur, everyday life and traditional trades. Its lively, participatory guided tours introduce activities such as breadmaking and weaving with wool and hemp. If you are interested in a particular topic, check the current tour programme.

The area’s architectural and local history also offers tangible points of interest. The restored Manoir de Prégentil was probably built in the first quarter of the 16th century and was listed as a Monument historique in 1988; it is privately owned. The Chapelle des Patarons dates from 1814 and features geometric murals and a remarkable altarpiece. Its colloquial name is associated with the “Petite Église” in the Champsaur. After the 1801 Concordat, some residents joined this movement because they opposed the reform.

On the Les Roranches circular trail, you can discover the Chapelle Saint-Pancrace des Roranches. The hamlet of Hameau des Roranches is considered representative of traditional Champsaur settlement patterns; a bread oven is well preserved there. The lintel of the Église paroissiale Saint-Nicolas bears the date 1852.

Trails and Outdoor Activities

Le Palastre is classified as a difficult hike and starts in Saint-Jean-Saint-Nicolas. The route is 9.4 km long, follows an out-and-back trail and has an elevation gain of 667 metres. The ascent crosses mountain pastures and alpine grassland to a summit offering remarkable views over the Champsaur Valley, the Gap area and the surrounding mountain ranges. The distance, elevation gain and difficulty rating give you concrete information to help decide whether to include this hike in your plans. Trail conditions can change, so it is advisable to check the latest conditions before setting off.

The Les rives du Drac route offers a different experience: it follows the Drac to Les Ricous and returns via the covered Canal de Gap below the La Sapinière forest. The Le circuit de l'Adou loop also starts in Saint-Jean-Saint-Nicolas; information panels along the route provide details about aquatic habitats. The trails therefore differ not only in their routes, but also in what they focus on along the way.

For mountain biking, the Bike park du Châtelard has 2.8 km of fun cross-country trails, with a green, a blue and a red route. Seasonal opening times may vary, so check the latest dates. The Base de loisirs du Châtelard has sports courts for basketball, handball, volleyball, five-a-side football, field hockey, badminton and tennis ball. There are also children’s play equipment, a roller hockey rink, a skatepark, an orienteering course and a picnic area; individual facilities may change.

The Patinoire de Pont du Fossé is a 720 m² artificial outdoor ice rink with an activities programme. Opening times depend on the season, so it is worth checking the dates before your visit. From Pont-du-Fossé, you can access the high valleys and the southwestern entrances to Parc national des Écrins. For local food, the Friday market offers produce from the Champsaur Valgaudemar and surrounding areas; individual vendors vary.
