There are several ways to plan a trip to Réotier: a remarkable geological natural phenomenon, historic religious buildings, and hiking or mountain biking trails. Activities vary in duration, elevation gain and season. When planning your dates, you can first decide whether to focus on nature, culture or a particular route.

Fontaine Pétrifiante and the natural landscape

The Fontaine Pétrifiante de Réotier is a geological natural phenomenon: mineral water creates spectacular limestone formations there. The spring is located in a Natura 2000 site, a sensitive natural area and the membership area of Écrins National Park. The rock formations are therefore a distinct attraction for anyone who also considers geology and nature when choosing a destination.

Chapels, a church and a carnival tradition

The Notre-Dame-des-Neiges chapel in the hamlet of Les Casses was probably built after 1716 and rebuilt in the 18th century. It was consecrated in August 1759; elements from the Renaissance period can be seen on its door and window. Saint-Michel Church tells another story of construction: its nave was renovated in the 16th century. Its three vaults, with geometrically profiled capitals, display an arrangement typical of the 18th century.

Chorjo is another part of Réotier’s cultural life. The local carnival tradition is celebrated every year around Shrove Tuesday. Residents make a straw figure, dress it in second-hand clothes and burn it on a bonfire on the day of the festival. Exact dates and arrangements may vary, so bear this in mind if you want to plan your trip specifically around the tradition.

Hiking with clear timings

The hike to Tête de Vautisse is rated difficult. The ascent and descent are listed as taking five hours; the route also has an elevation gain of 764 metres. These figures help you factor the time required and the elevation difference into your day’s plans. Mountain conditions and trail safety should be checked for the season. In clear weather, the summit offers views of Viso to the east, Mont Blanc to the north and Ventoux to the southwest.

Winter outings and seasonal conditions

Above 1,500 metres, the high-altitude area around Réotier offers opportunities for ski touring and snowshoeing from November to May. Snow cover and route conditions change from year to year. For specific planning, the season alone is not enough: also check the conditions on your chosen route.

Winter route No. 1, “Plein hiver,” leads to the orientation board and starts at Saint-Michel Church. It is listed as taking two and a half hours, with 312 metres of ascent and descent. Most winter routes, however, start at an altitude of 1,400 metres at the entrance to the Plateau de Truchet. When choosing, check which route you plan to take and where it begins; winter road and snow conditions should be checked locally. Seasonal access and trail conditions may vary.

Mountain biking in Réotier

Three mountain biking trails pass through Réotier: L’Aubreau, Le tour de la Durance and Le vignoble. If you are including a cycling trip in your travel plans, first choose one of these named routes and check the relevant route conditions locally.

Find a hotel for your planned stay

When looking for a hotel in Réotier, it helps to first decide what your trip will focus on: the hike rated difficult, seasonal winter activities, or the cultural sites and Chorjo. This makes it easier to plan your travel dates around your intended stay. Check availability for your specific dates before booking.
