Half of the area of La Palud-sur-Verdon is part of Natura 2000 sites that include gorges, a canyon and a plateau. The commune lies in the heart of the Gorges du Verdon and by the Grand Canyon du Verdon. Here, an expansive gorge landscape meets a range of ways to explore: a nature reserve with terraces and springs, a panoramic road, challenging hikes and historic landmarks. When planning your trip, it is worth treating these as separate activities rather than one single outing, and comparing their individual character and conditions.

The Saint Maurin natural area

One distinctive natural area is the Réserve naturelle régionale de Saint Maurin. It covers more than 20 hectares above the right bank of the Verdon. Its terraces feature natural meadows formed on tufa deposits, while springs emerge from the rock face as cascades. These features make the Réserve a distinct nature destination within the wider gorge landscape. Public access is free, but regulated. The Réserve may be entered on foot only via marked trails. Check the access rules before your trip.

Distinguishing hikes and routes

The specific route profiles can help you choose a hike. The Sentier Blanc-Martel is about 15 kilometres long, difficult, and has technical sections. It runs along the Verdon from the Chalet de la Maline in La Palud-sur-Verdon to the Point Sublime in Rougon. Check trail conditions and any temporary restrictions before setting off. The Chemin du Belvédère de la Dent d’Aire is 8.2 kilometres long, also difficult, and described as taking about three hours for the round trip. The trail offers views of La Palud, the surrounding mountains and the Grand Canyon. Weather and snow can change trail conditions. So your choice depends on more than distance: technical sections and the route between two named places are part of the Blanc-Martel’s profile; for the Dent d’Aire, you can factor in an approximate round-trip duration.

If you want to include a road route in your trip plans alongside hikes, the Route des Crêtes (D23) runs along the right bank of the Gorges du Verdon. This panoramic road forms a 23-kilometre loop. Road access is seasonal; check before your visit. This gives you a named road loop with its own access conditions to choose from alongside the hiking routes.

Bell tower and former village

Cultural details offer a different focus. The Romanesque bell tower of the church in La Palud-sur-Verdon is listed as a historic monument. In the area of La Palud-sur-Verdon, visitors can also stroll through the former village of Châteauneuf-les-Moustiers. The tourism office for the Gorges du Verdon, La Palud-sur-Verdon and Rougon is in the centre of the village, in the château. If you plan to visit, check opening information in advance.
