In the Largue Valley, the view from Aubenas-Les-Alpes stretches across the Montagne de Lure to the Col de Montfuron. This named panorama brings together the valley, mountain and pass in a specific landscape setting. Aubenas-Les-Alpes is also located in the Parc Régional du Lubéron and in the heart of the Géoparc UNESCO de Haute-Provence. Choosing a place to stay therefore brings together a particular view and two regional natural and landscape settings. You can also explore the area by cycling routes and historic sites. If you are looking for a holiday rental, cycling, a circular route and traces of the medieval village can each shape a different focus for your stay.
Landscape and Cycling Routes
The moderately difficult, 46.3-kilometre circular cycling route “REVEST-DES-BROUSSES - À vélo entre les sources du Largue et du Calavon” passes through Aubenas-Les-Alpes. It is not signposted, so check the route before setting out and plan for navigation. Another cycling route listed from Aubenas-Les-Alpes is circular route no. 7, “Forcalquier-Lure à vélo”. The first route provides a specific distance and difficulty level to help you choose; route no. 7 adds another option listed as starting from the village. You can assess one route by its length and difficulty rating, and take the other’s connection to Aubenas-Les-Alpes into account.
Prehistory and Cultural Heritage
The area around Aubenas-Les-Alpes was already inhabited during the Middle Paleolithic. There was intensive human activity in the Largue Valley during the Neolithic, associated with flint deposits that occur at the surface there. The two periods represent different phases: early habitation and intensive Neolithic activity, when surface flint played a specific role.
The Church of the Assumption of Mary is a valuable remnant of the medieval village. Another historic feature is the circular route to Château d'Aubenas. It climbs through the garrigue to the château; the return follows an old path paved with calade stone. The climb through the garrigue and the paved return give the route a clear course, linking the château destination with a section of old path.
Summer Stay and Clear Skies
In summer, Grande Fontaine is a place where you can cool off with your feet in the water. This is a specific highlight for a warm-weather stay, alongside cycling and cultural activities. Aubenas-Les-Alpes is also designated a Village Étoilé, with exceptionally clear skies. The skies add another facet to the landscape, complementing the panorama of the Largue Valley.
