Saint-Jouin-de-Marnes combines an important abbey church with surviving traces of the former abbey and walking and cycling routes. This offers different points of focus for planning your trip: architecture and local history on the one hand, and routes through the countryside on the other. There are also several ways to choose an activity—from a hike with a stated duration to a discovery trail with shortcuts and a longer cycling circuit.

Abbey Church and the History of the Abbey

The present-day abbey church of Saint-Jouin was built between 1095 and 1130 by the monk Raoul. It was classified as a historic monument in 1862. Attached to the church is the surviving southern section of the cloister. Pierre d’Amboise had the cloister built in 1476; today, only this section of the complex remains. The dates place the two parts in context: the church was built in the late 11th and early 12th centuries, and the cloister followed in the 15th century.

The Benedictine abbey’s furnishings include the 15th-century bronze statuette “Saint Jouin.” It is located there and crowns a holy-water font. Alongside the buildings, it offers a tangible glimpse of an individual object from the abbey. A surrounding wall, a park, and the remains of the monastic buildings and the ancillary buildings around them, dating from the 17th century, have also survived from the former Benedictine abbey.

The abbey’s former presbytery is another distinct historic landmark: it is fully protected as a historic monument. It was listed on 23 January 2017. Together with the church and the surviving section of the cloister, it presents a picture encompassing different parts of the abbey and different periods.

Other Protected Sites

La Motte de Saint-Jouin is a classified site in Saint-Jouin-de-Marnes. It was classified on 8 June 1909. If you are interested in protected sites, you can consider this designation alongside the abbey’s historic buildings as a distinct aspect of the area’s history. The church, former presbytery, and La Motte represent different types of protection and each offers its own historical point of reference.

Hiking Along the Dive

The circular walking route “Au fil de la Dive par Marnes et Lion” is marked in yellow, is 12.5 kilometres long, and is listed as taking three hours. It follows grassy paths alongside clear water as far as the Prepson, the Dive’s main tributary. The distance and duration provide a clear guide if you are planning time for a longer hike.

“La sente divine” offers a different focus. The educational discovery trail runs along the Dive, and shortcuts allow you to choose your own route. Information panels cover topics including washhouses, waterways, and sacred plants. While the circular walking route is listed as 12.5 kilometres and three hours, the shortcuts on “La sente divine” give you flexibility in choosing your route. The panels add thematic points of interest along the way, rather than focusing solely on the distance covered.

Cycling Between the Dive and the Thouet

The 33-kilometre cycling circuit “La plaine, entre Dive et Thouet” passes through the countryside between the two rivers. Along the way, you can enjoy a view of the abbey church of Saint-Jouin-de-Marnes. The circuit thus combines a longer ride through the river landscape with a view of the area’s landmark building. Check route conditions before setting off.

You can compare the activity details directly: the “Au fil de la Dive par Marnes et Lion” hike has a stated duration of three hours; “La sente divine” allows you to choose your own route using shortcuts; and the cycling circuit covers 33 kilometres. This lets you choose based on whether you prefer a hike with a specified duration, a discovery trail that can be shortened, or a longer cycle ride, without treating the options as equivalent.
