Chauray lies on a hillside above the Sèvre Niortaise. Consider whether you would like to spend most of your time outdoors, explore cultural topics or include a leisure activity.

Walks and themed trails

The Bords de Sèvre circular trail is 3.7 kilometres long and passes through a rural, shaded landscape. It includes seven hectares of meadows that have been laid out as paths. The Tèrra-Aventura route “Secrets de Sèvre bien gardés” is a 4.5-kilometre walking route to explore. It focuses on Protestantism in Poitou and its secret gatherings, and is suitable for pushchairs. The routes therefore differ in length and character: Bords de Sèvre focuses on the landscape, while Tèrra-Aventura offers a themed exploration.

Culture and architecture

The Temple de Chauray has a cloverleaf-shaped floor plan and is listed as a historic monument. The floor plan describes the building’s form when viewed from above; at the Temple, its shape is itself an architectural feature. Since 1989, the building has served as a venue for exhibitions and concerts. Architecture and cultural use offer different points of interest: one concerns the building’s form, the other its cultural programme. If you are planning to attend a specific event, check the current programme, as individual events may change. A scallop shell is located at the bottom of the wall of the nave of Église Saint-Pierre. The nave is the main space in the church; the shell is a small architectural detail, alongside the Temple’s cloverleaf-shaped floor plan.

Market and leisure pool

Chauray’s weekly market is held in the hall at Espace Bernard Larcher. Stalls sell fish, home-grown vegetables and eggs, goat’s cheese, honey, baked goods and seasonal products from other traders. Alongside the walking trails and buildings, the market adds a culinary highlight.

The Centre aquatique des Fraignes is primarily geared towards family leisure activities with a playful focus. It has five pools, including a 25 Ă— 10-metre sports pool and an approximately 125-square-metre leisure and learning pool with water jets. There is also a paddling pool, a water slide with a catch pool, a whirlpool and a hammam. The sports pool and the leisure and learning pool cater to different uses; the paddling pool and slide complement the playful focus.

Plan time for the market and trail

For planning your schedule, the market and Tèrra-Aventura offer different points of reference: the market is held on Fridays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon, while exploring the route takes more than two hours. If you would like to include both, schedule the market for a suitable morning and set aside a separate block of time for the route. Check the market hours before travelling; traders and seasonal products may change.
