In Pamproux, historic buildings meet a designated natural area, digital art offerings and a range of activities. When planning a stay, it helps to first decide what interests you most: architectural history, nature trails, or a particular cultural or leisure activity?
Market hall and religious architectural history
The Halle de Pamproux was built around 1700 and was listed in its entirety as a Monument historique by decree dated 28 June 2011. A weekly market is also held in the hall. If you would like to combine a visit to the market with a look at the historic building, check the latest market details in advance, as they may change.
The Église Saint-Maixent was classified as a Monument historique by decree dated 10 February 1913. It consists of a single nave with five bays and retains a two-storey, arcaded bell tower dating from the 12th century. The former priory stands directly beside it and preserves an impressive octagonal staircase from the 15th century. The church and priory thus offer different architectural features from two centuries: the bell tower and the staircase.
Natural area and route choices
La Côte-Belet is designated as an Espace Naturel Sensible at département level and is managed by the Conservatoire d’Espaces Naturels de Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The natural area reaches an altitude of 117 metres and offers a viewpoint over the surrounding area. A 500-metre educational trail is suitable for families. La Côte-Belet can also be explored on foot or by bicycle, while taking care to respect the local fauna and flora. Check trail conditions and local restrictions before setting out.
The destinations described above can help you choose a route: Feuille de vigne connects the centre of Pamproux with La Côte-Belet. The Tèrra-Aventura route “Le lièvre et la tortou” starts in the historic centre, passes through La Côte-Belet and continues to the prehistoric tumulus site at Bougon. This route therefore extends beyond the natural area to an archaeological destination.
Art, animals and leisure activities
The Micro-Folie de Pamproux presents several thousand digitised works of art from regional, national and international museums on large screens and tablets. There is also a virtual reality area and educational video games. The programme is supplemented by themed workshops on artistic practice; their specific content may vary. Check in advance which workshops are taking place during your visit.
Founded in 2015, Parc-Elevage Del Sol is a private animal park. Visits are by appointment and accompanied by a breeder. Animals there include Poitevin goats and Poitou donkeys; which animals you can see may change over time. The “soigneur d'un jour” activity gives visitors an insight into the daily work of an animal keeper. This activity is also available by appointment. Confirm current availability before travelling.
The course programme at Piscine municipale Edmond Audis includes swimming lessons in all four strokes, from beginner to advanced level. Courses for overcoming aquaphobia, aquagym and Fit'palme are also offered. Schedules and programme details may change; check current dates if you want to plan a course as part of your visit.
