At the Donjon de La Chaise, a long building history meets a clear limit on visits: the keep can only be seen from a distance. Vouthon also has a parish church in a Templar commandery, as well as cave and mill visits that require different kinds of advance arrangements. Those planning a stay can therefore consider historic buildings and specifically organised visits as separate highlights.

Donjon de La Chaise: a keep with a long building history

The square keep was built in the 11th century at La Garenne, on a rock crisscrossed by underground passageways. It was altered in the 15th and 16th centuries and has been listed as a historic monument since 8 July 1988. These dates shed light on different aspects: its origins, later structural changes, and its heritage status. Since the donjon can only be seen from a distance, plan to view this historic building from afar rather than visit its interior.

Saint-Martin and the Templar commandery

The parish church of Saint-Martin is located in the chapel of Vouthon’s Templar commandery, which dates back to the 12th century. In 1312, the commandery passed to the Order of the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem. The year therefore marks the change of order, while the 12th century identifies the commandery’s origins. Two aspects of the site can thus be understood together: the parish church in a commandery chapel and the change in its institutional affiliation.

In historical comparison, the dates tell different stories: at the donjon, construction in the 11th century was followed by alterations in the 15th and 16th centuries; for the commandery, the focus is on its 12th-century origins and the change of order in 1312. This makes it possible to consider structural changes and institutional transition separately.

Cave and mill: visits by appointment

Visits to the Grotte de La Chaise in Vouthon are part of the annual Préhistoire en Tardoire programme. Visits can be arranged by reservation through the tourist office. Before travelling, check the specific programme dates and availability so you can fit the cave visit into your plans.

The Moulin de Vouthon can be visited year-round by prior telephone appointment; make the arrangements before travelling. The mill produces certified organic oils and flours from hazelnuts, camelina, walnuts, and sesame. Alongside the historical attractions, it offers a look at how these foods are produced.

The difference is clear when planning your visits: for the Grotte, check the dates of the annual programme and make a reservation through the tourist office; for the Moulin, a telephone appointment is the main requirement. The mill’s year-round visiting hours give it a different time frame from the cave visit, which is part of a programme. You can plan the visits according to the arrangements required for each.
