The Gouffre de Gensac-la-Pallue highlights the underground course of water: water that flows overground disappears into the ground upstream and resurfaces at the Gouffre. As a karst spring, or resurgence spring, the site exemplifies this transition between disappearance and emergence.

Water and landscape

The outflow from the Gouffre forms the Ri de Gensac. The stream is three kilometres long and does not cross the municipal boundaries. Access along its banks may be restricted. The spring, underground course and stream represent different stages in a single hydrological system.

Another point of interest is the Marais de Gensac-la-Pallue, the largest marshland in the Charente department. It consists mainly of the priority habitat type known as cladiaie. These details complement each other: the size places the marshland in the context of the department, while cladiaie identifies its predominant habitat. Whereas the Gouffre focuses on the course of water, the Marais describes a specific type of wetland. If you choose Gensac-la-Pallue for its natural features, you can distinguish between a geological watercourse and a marshland landscape.

In 1933 and 1934, the Gouffre was listed among the classified landscape and natural sites of the Charente department. This historical designation adds another perspective to the description of the landscape.

Buildings and local history

The Église Saint-Martin is a parish church dating from the late 12th century. Its Romanesque architecture has three levels, topped by four small turrets. The Château de Gademoulin was rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style from 1815, based on plans by the architect Louis-Charles Geay. The two buildings therefore represent different architectural periods: the Romanesque church of the late 12th century and the later Neo-Gothic reconstruction.

The Logis de l'Eclopart was an outbuilding of the Roissac seigneury. Its façades and roofs were listed as a historic monument by decree dated 31 December 1986. The protected parts of the building and its former connection to Roissac offer two different insights into the history of the Logis.

The Fontaine et lavoir des Martinauds is another named historic building complex, dating from before 1850. The fountain and washhouse add another building type to the churches and manor houses.

Choose nature or cultural heritage

Gensac-la-Pallue offers the visitor activity “Les itinéraires du temps – Les aventures de Titou & Léa à Gensac-la-Pallue”. It complements the history of the landscape and buildings with a distinct, named activity.

The themes offer a clear way to choose a destination: the Gouffre draws attention to karst and water, while the Marais focuses on wetlands and habitat. Saint-Martin, the Château de Gademoulin, the Logis de l'Eclopart and the Fontaine et lavoir des Martinauds offer different architectural and historical perspectives. You can decide whether natural features, architectural history or a mix of the two should shape your stay.
