Montembœuf offers two clearly distinct hiking trails: the Sentier du Petit Mairat follows the former route of the local narrow-gauge railway, while the Sentier de Beaussac passes through hamlets and a landscape of valleys, forests, rivers and streams. The town also hosts the annual L’Imprévu Festival and has stories to tell about its railway and church history. This means you can plan your trip around exercise, scenery or a specific date in September.
Two hiking trails with different highlights
The route descriptions, updated on 23 December 2024, list the 12 km Sentier du Petit Mairat and the 13 km Sentier de Beaussac. Both start at 1 Place de la Mairie in Montembœuf. Their stated lengths differ by just one kilometre, but the descriptions emphasise different features. The Petit Mairat is suitable for hiking, Nordic walking, running and mountain biking. Beaussac passes through numerous hamlets and takes in valleys, forests, rivers and streams. When choosing between the trails, you can weigh up their lengths and the respective highlights: several explicitly listed activities on one trail, and a more extensively described landscape on the other.
Traces of the local railway and finding your way
On the Petit Mairat, the route also offers a way to explore the town’s railway past. The trail follows the former route of the local narrow-gauge railway and passes a water tower that was once used to fill the small steam train’s water tanks. The railway connection is grounded in two specific features: the former trackbed and the tower’s historic function.
To help you prepare, the municipality directs visitors to Cirkwi. There you can download GPX files, print PDF routes and use your smartphone to follow the trails, with additional information about individual points of interest. This provides different ways to navigate the trails: digital guidance, a printed route or a smartphone.
L’Imprévu Festival in September
The L’Imprévu Festival takes place every year on the second weekend of September. Its cultural programme brings together artists with disabilities and other artists without distinction, in the same programme and on the same stages. Each year, the festival also organises a collaborative visual arts work. It is put together on the day before the festival and displayed throughout the festival weekend. If you want to include the festival in your travel plans, you can schedule your stay for that weekend; the collaborative work adds visual art to the programme of stage performances.
Church history in Montembœuf
The Église Saint-Sixte is mentioned in connection with the Sentier du Petit Mairat. The town’s history also includes the story of two successive churches: the new one was built, and the old one, which obstructed traffic at the lower end of the square, was demolished. Alongside traces of the former railway, changes involving the churches are another historical theme to explore during a stay in Montembœuf.
