Discover Suaux through two different facets: the town centre, with the Château de Suaux and Saint-Cybard Church, and the rolling countryside, with its forests, groves, natural meadows and cultivated land. Fountains, small streams and two named walking trails complete the picture. During your stay, you can explore historic buildings and the landscape as distinct points of interest.
The Château, church and local history
The Château de Suaux stands in the town centre, behind the church, and can be reached through the gatehouse. It was built in 1585. Frescoes from the 16th and 17th centuries and a magnificent fireplace are among its distinctive features. The construction date places the Château in the late 16th century, while the frescoes point to decorative features from two centuries. The construction date and frescoes thus offer different chronological reference points for viewing the château.
Saint-Cybard Church dates from the 13th century and has been restored. Its features include Stations of the Cross, a gallery, a pulpit, a bas-relief and interior lighting. The two buildings can be considered side by side historically: the church points to the 13th century, while the Château dates to 1585. This juxtaposition brings together two periods in the town centre and complements the Château’s exterior architecture with the church’s interior features.
Suaux also lies on the Via Agrippa, the Roman road between Lyon and Saintes. This offers a different perspective from the town’s buildings: here, the focus is on a Roman road connecting two cities.
Countryside and waterways
The landscape around Suaux is hilly and includes forests, groves, natural meadows and cultivated land. Fountains are also part of the local landscape: every village in Suaux has a fountain and a washhouse. Many fountains feed small streams, and some have retained their washhouses. The streams flow into the Bonnieure, the municipality’s main river, which runs through the south. The landscape therefore includes individual village fountains, small waterways and a river.
Walking trails and getting there
The route description, updated on 23 December 2024, gives Rue Ouest 1, 16260 Suaux as the starting point for the “Suaux sentier de la verte Epine” walking trail and lists hiking, Nordic walking, running and mountain biking as suitable activities. The “Suaux sentier les Vallées” trail follows quiet, wooded paths through the countryside. The descriptions emphasise different things: one lists several activities, while the other characterises the route as quiet and wooded. This can help you narrow down your options based on the type of activity or the kind of trail you prefer.
Suaux is crossed by the RN 141 and a non-electrified railway line; there is no train station in the town. The nearest stations are in Chasseneuil to the south and Roumazières to the north. If you are considering travelling by train, check in advance which of these stations suits your connection and what the timetables are.
