From local geology to medieval burials, from paper mills to comic sketches: Angoulême’s cultural themes span several eras and forms of expression. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether you would prefer to focus on historical periods, industrial paper history, comic collections or a motorsport event.

The cathedral and long periods of history

Cathédrale Saint-Pierre is classified as a monument historique; it was classified under the 1840 list. The archaeological and palaeontological collections at the Musée d’Angoulême offer a different perspective on time. They cover the local geological history, dinosaur sites, and the prehistoric and historical cultures of the Charente area. Their scope ranges from Neanderthals to medieval burials.

Together, these provide two distinct reference points: the cathedral’s heritage classification and collections covering natural history and human cultures over long periods. If you are interested in the area’s development, the Musée d’Angoulême offers a broad chronological perspective; the cathedral complements it with a clearly dated heritage classification.

Paper history on the Charente

The Musée du Papier is housed in the former Lacroix and Joseph-Bardou “Le Nil” paper mills. Its buildings were built over the Charente and form a bridge to the Île de Saint-Cybard. This industrial history is also explored at the “Charente Confluences, from the River to Industry, from Paper to Image” interpretation centre, which focuses on Angoulême’s significant industrial heritage associated with paper and related industries.

Preserved paper-related materials include paper samples, packaging, cigarette paper and advertising posters. The collection therefore goes beyond a single product. Taken together with the interpretation centre’s theme, this offers another way to look at the subject: alongside the former use of the paper mills, it highlights the role of paper and related industries in Angoulême’s industrial heritage.

Comic culture: collections and murals

The Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l’image is spread across three striking buildings located on or overlooking a river. It includes the Musée de la bande dessinée, the Maison des auteurs, a cinema, a bookshop, a comic library, a heritage library, a documentation and research centre, and a cultural and educational programme. Individual programmes and facilities may change.

A particular focus is the preservation of the different stages of comic creation: the Cité preserves works ranging from original pages to albums, and from sketches to finished pieces. The Route Murs BD offers a different perspective, featuring 30 comic murals. You can explore the route on a guided tour with the tourist office or independently using an app. This makes it possible to see the institutional collections and murals as different forms of comic culture.

The Circuit des Remparts

The Circuit des Remparts also has its own history. It was first held in July 1939, returned to the roads of the Charente in 1978 and has been held there ever since. The programme includes an elegance competition, a Concours d’état, an international touring rally on the roads of the Charente, exhibitions and a race in the town centre. The race route has remained unchanged since 1939.

Individual programme events may vary from one edition to the next. If you would like to include the Circuit in your travel plans, check the dates and programme for the relevant edition. This sets it apart from the museums and collections: here, the focus is on an event date, while the other sections describe Angoulême’s heritage, industrial and comic-related perspectives.
