The Ruffec Arboretum combines urban green space with an impressive diversity: created in 1991, it covers 15,500 m² and is home to around a hundred tree species. As the city’s largest park, it is a memorable starting point for a stay that takes in gardens and nature as well as historic buildings. The arboretum is also known as the “Bois de l’Europe.”

Gardens and River Landscape

Along the Lien lies the Champ de Tivoli, a recreational area with a plant maze. The river creates biodiversity here, which is fostered through ecological management. Together with the arboretum, this spot reveals another side of Ruffec: plants and landscape are a destination in their own right, not merely the setting for a town stroll.

The Jardin des Arts is defined by flowers and trees, with artworks displayed along its paths. It is located in a historic district and offers a view of the historic château in the Plaisance district, which is privately owned. The garden is open to the public free of charge. Those looking to combine outdoor art with views of Ruffec’s historic surroundings will find a distinctive place to visit here.

Chapels, Church and Château

The Saint-Blaise Chapel was built in the 12th century on the right bank of the Péruse, in the Pontereau suburb. It was a former priory church dedicated to Saint Benedict, founded by Nanteuil-en-Vallée Abbey and placed under the protection of the Castrum of Ruffec. One particularly notable feature of the ruins is the flat end wall with its elegant group of three windows. The chapel offers a tangible insight into the town’s architectural history.

An uncertain historical interpretation is also associated with the former church: it may have controlled a river crossing in the 13th century, possibly a ford, on a pilgrimage route to Compostela. The possible ford and route should therefore be understood as an interpretation, not as established fact. At Saint-André Church, the sculpted decoration above the opening shows Christ in a mandorla, flanked by two angels; it depicts the Ascension of Christ.

The château on the Lien is a private residence dating from the 16th century. It was built on the remains of Ruffec’s former château and features machicolations and Renaissance decoration. Its private status distinguishes it from the gardens and public cultural sites that are also part of the visitor attractions.

Plan Trails and Activities

There is a permanent orienteering course in the town centre. The starting board is located behind the Val de Charente “La Crysalide” sociocultural centre in the Jardin Vert. You can complete the activity using a paper map or the free Navitabi app. Courses are graded by difficulty; the green and blue courses are suitable for children. As seasonal access conditions and course layouts may change, check the current situation before setting out.

For hikes, choose between two permanently marked discovery trails of 12 km and 18 km around Ruffec; the offer also includes a link from the station. Another hiking trail with a fitness course leads from Ruffec towards the Charente near Rejallant. The orienteering course starts at the Jardin Vert, while the hiking trails, with their stated distances, allow for a different kind of time planning.

At the Atelier du vitrail, guided tours with stained-glass demonstrations last 30 minutes. They take place by appointment and are limited to five or six people at a time; admission is free. The workshop is open year-round, Monday to Friday. Arrange your visit in advance and check visitor regulations before travelling.

The nonprofit cinema Le Family operates two screens year-round, with 181 and 88 seats. Its varied programme includes film discussions and youth festivals; individual programme offerings may change. Film and stained glass thus complement visits to the gardens and historic buildings with different cultural experiences.

Market and Excursions in the Surrounding Area

Ruffec’s weekly market takes place year-round on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Nearby, at Réjallant in Condac, the water sports centre offers outings lasting from one hour to a full day. Departures depend on a reservation. These outings provide a separate option alongside Ruffec’s trails and cultural sites; plan them as a distinct part of your itinerary.
