The Sentier des Belles vues gives a trip to Ranville-Breuillaud a clear focus on hiking. Along the way, scenic views and distinctive waypoints go hand in hand; the Notre-Dame Church adds a distinctive architectural feature. If you prefer to travel by bike, you can also include cycle route no. 33 in your plans.
Hike with two time options
The Sentier des Belles vues is a 17-kilometre circular trail that takes about four hours and 30 minutes to walk. Alternatively, there is a 10-kilometre version, which takes about three hours to walk. This gives you two clearly distinct options in terms of time and distance: the shorter version reduces the distance by seven kilometres and the estimated walking time by around an hour and a half. This lets you choose based on both the distance and the time you have available.
The starting point is the Salle des fĂŞtes. There is a picnic table and a boules court there. These two features are part of the trailhead and complement the information about distance and walking time with a specific place to begin the loop.
Scenery and waypoints
The Sentier des Belles vues passes through very beautiful landscapes and offers magnificent viewpoints. As you leave Breuillaud, the trail offers a very beautiful view of the Bois des Bouchauds; it also passes through the Bois du Gland. The landscape is showcased both by a named viewpoint and by a woodland section of the trail.
Buildings also feature as waypoints, though in different ways: the trail runs alongside the boundary wall of the privately owned Château d’Orfeuille and offers a very beautiful view of the Château de Lucheville. In Lucheville, the route passes through an equestrian centre. An ancient camp once stood at one point along the trail. These stops bring together different aspects: a private château wall, a view of a château, an equestrian centre along the route, and a historic site.
Notre-Dame and late Gothic art
Notre-Dame Church adds a distinct cultural and historical focus to the landscape and trail. Its main construction phase dates to the 15th century. The church features a late Gothic style that is uncommon in the region. It also has a fine collection of statues, considered rare in rural areas. The construction period, the regionally uncommon style, and the sculpture collection give the site a clearly defined architectural and art-historical character.
Cycling and accommodation
Cycle route no. 33 leads to a bivouac site in Ranville-Breuillaud, adding a cycling option to the walking loop. If you plan to ride this route, it is advisable to check the latest route conditions before setting off.
Glamping Tipis de Ranville-Breuillaud offers stays in cosy tipis. Check current availability before your trip. This lets you choose your accommodation separately from deciding whether to hike or cycle the route.
