Paizay-Naudouin-Embourie offers several ways to explore its history: Château de Saveilles with its castle and Renaissance architecture, Gallo-Roman remains in Embourie, and the Jardin Antique. For a cultural stay, you can choose between architectural history, archaeological interpretation and playful activities. Each place and theme has a different focus, rather than all offering the same kind of visit.

Château de Saveilles: Architecture and Activity Trails

Château de Saveilles has overlooked the commune of Paizay-Naudouin-Embourie since the 14th century. Its architecture combines the features of a medieval castle with the elegance of a Renaissance residence. Details include numerous sculptures, dormer windows with mythological themes and mullioned windows, as well as loopholes, arrow slits and machicolations. The 19th-century chapel is dedicated to Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs. You can explore the château through both its architectural forms and individual decorative details.

The château is open to individual visitors, groups, associations and school groups. Two playful activity trails are designed for families or friends and feature games, riddles and challenges. So, alongside looking at the architecture, visitors can also take part in activities. On the Ruffec–Chef-Boutonne section of La Vélidéale, Château de Saveilles in Paizay-Naudouin-Embourie is listed as a stop. It is therefore a named stop on this stage for cyclists.

Gallo-Roman Villa and Interpretation of Antiquity

At the Villa Gallo-Romaine d’Embourie, 800 m² of archaeological remains have been uncovered. They belong to a residence that was inhabited from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD. This long time span makes the site a different way to explore local history from the medieval and Renaissance architecture of the château.

The Espace découverte, also known as the “petit musée,” displays objects and fresco fragments from the villa. Models, information panels, illustrations, reproductions and a film explain how ancient frescoes were made and the work of archaeologists. In 2026, school groups are also welcome at the villa outside the Enfants du Patrimoine event. Opening and reservation conditions for the Espace découverte may change; check them before your visit.

Church and Jardin Antique

The western façade of Église Saint-Génis d’Embourie has been listed as a historic monument since 16 December 1987. The church stands on the site of a medieval cemetery. The arches of the south side chapel, built at the end of the Middle Ages, are still visible. Here, a clearly dated heritage listing meets surviving architectural details.

The Jardin Antique is open free of charge every day throughout the year. It takes visitors through different areas of a landscape shaped by Roman Gaul. There, you can learn about cultivated plants and their significance in everyday life during the Gallo-Roman period. Check the current visiting conditions in advance. The garden focuses on plants and daily life, while the villa focuses on excavated remains, artefacts and archaeological work.

Playful Discoveries

Alongside the two trails at the château, there is the “RDV en Gaule chevelue” geocaching activity by Terra Aventura. Smartphone riddles lead visitors on a treasure hunt. This offers another playful way to explore, this time with the smartphone as part of the activity. When choosing a cultural stay, you can therefore follow your interests: architecture and riddles at the château, archaeological finds and fresco interpretation at the villa, or plants and Gallo-Roman daily life in the Jardin Antique.
