Jarnac sits on a hill on the right bank of the Charente. Two main attractions are especially useful when choosing what to see: the Mitterrand sites and the town’s older architectural history, on the one hand, and walks and waterside activities on the other. Timing matters: some water activities are available only in summer, while the truffle market takes place from December to February.

Cultural sites linked to Mitterrand

A good place to start is the Maison Natale de François Mitterrand at 22 Rue Abel Guy, which is open to visitors. You can see living rooms, furniture and objects preserved over four generations, as well as a garden and a cooperage. The site also has a longer history: the house was built on the grounds of the last Protestant temple to be authorized before the Edict of Nantes was revoked on 18 October 1685.

The Musée François Mitterrand is located in the Espace culturel de l’Orangerie. It displays gifts François Mitterrand received from prominent figures and heads of state from around the world. It offers a different perspective from the Maison Natale: here, the collection of gifts takes center stage, while the Maison Natale focuses on the house’s living spaces and objects.

The town’s older architectural history includes the Saint-Michel crypt beneath the Église Saint-Pierre and the Temple protestant. The crypt dates from the 12th century and is a protected historic monument. The Temple protestant, including its interior, is listed as a historic monument; it was listed by decree on 26 October 1998. The digital experience “Les itinéraires du temps – Jarnac à l'époque industrielle” explores 19th-century Jarnac through virtual reality, historical reconstructions and interactive activities. Check the digital platform before your trip.

The Charente, trails and leisure

The “Au fil de l'eau” loop passes through Jarnac and leads to Île Madame. The park and the banks of the Charente are also inviting places for walks year-round. You can choose between a named walking route and a stroll through the park and along the riverbanks.

The Aire de loisirs de l’Île Madame has volleyball and basketball courts, children’s play equipment and a skate park; the facilities are open to everyone. For river activities, Jarnac Sports Canoë Kayak offers a range of options during the summer season and rents out canoes, kayaks, paddleboards and large paddleboards. There is also a 5 km loop starting and finishing in Jarnac. The activities are seasonal, and the route’s operation depends on seasonal conditions. Check the conditions for your travel dates.

The Piscine de Jarnac is an aquatic complex with a large pool, a paddling pool and green spaces. It is open seasonally; check opening times and access conditions before your visit. For cycling, La Flow Vélo is another option: its Châteauneuf-sur-Charente–Cognac stage passes through the Charente vineyards and river landscape; a detour to Jarnac is well worth it.

For a look at the landscape, the ZNIEFF Type I Champ Buzin is worth noting. The site covers 212 ha in total, lies southeast of the municipality of Jarnac and surrounds the Charente; about one-third is in the neighboring municipality of Gondeville. The designated area therefore extends beyond Jarnac.

A winter travel highlight

Every year from December to February, Jarnac hosts the Marché aux truffes, a local gastronomic event. Exact dates may vary; check them if the market is an important part of your trip. This makes it possible to plan a winter visit around a distinct seasonal highlight, while water activities are more suited to the summer season.
