Montrollet combines distinctive heathland with trails and buildings from different periods. At 368 metres, the Landes de la Borderie is home to the highest point in the Charente département; 74 bird species are known there. The heathland’s animal and plant species are unique in Poitou-Charentes. The Église Saint-Sulpice and the Château de Montrollet add architectural and religious history to this natural landscape.

Heathland and Wildlife

The Landes de la Borderie is distinguished by its heathland and distinctive wildlife. 74 bird species are known in this area. Together, these details draw attention to a natural landscape where birdlife and animal and plant species are part of the same landscape theme. At 368 metres, this is also the highest point in the Charente département. Regional distinctions in wildlife are thus paired with a clearly identified geographical landmark.

Trails with Different Points of Interest

The Sentier des Landes de la Borderie is open to the public and about 3.5 kilometres long. It connects with other trails and can be extended by taking several loops. Its approximate length gives you an idea of the route, while the loops offer the option of making it longer. The Sentier les Sources starts in Montrollet and passes through the woods surrounding the village. It also follows farm tracks. The trails therefore offer different features to consider when choosing: the approximate length and potential extension of the Sentier des Landes, and the starting point and woodland and farm-track character of the Sentier les Sources.

The Sentier le Rocher aux Oiseaux offers a different focus. Themed information panels feature local places and legends. When choosing a trail, you can also consider whether you would like to include explanations of local sites and stories in your exploration.

Architectural Heritage and Religious History

The oldest parts of the Église Saint-Sulpice may date from the 11th century. The portal appears to date from the 16th century and incorporates reused elements from the 14th century. These dates point to several building phases, as well as older elements reused in the portal.

The church was also a destination for pilgrimages and devotions. On certain dates, visitors came mainly from rural areas of Limousin. This religious tradition is part of the village’s history.

The Château de Montrollet tells a different architectural story: the 15th-century château was built on the site of an older fortified castle. Together with the church, it broadens the picture of Montrollet, from sacred architecture and religious tradition to the history of a fortified site.

Geocaching and Local Cheese Production

The “Sur le toit de la Charente” geocaching experience introduces visitors to the natural heritage of the Rocher aux Oiseaux site. The Terra Aventura smartphone app guides you through the experience with clues to find along the way. Before your visit, check whether geocaching is currently available.

Cheesemaking is also part of the local culinary scene: GAEC Routier Ferrand produces goat’s and cow’s milk cheeses from its own farm. Product availability may vary by season. This agricultural production adds a culinary dimension to the natural and cultural themes of your stay.
