Montbron offers a range of starting points for planning a trip that combines cultural history, prehistory and landscape. The Station Verte tourism label stands for nature-focused, authentic, people-oriented and environmentally conscious tourism. Specific highlights include the Vieux Château, the permanent exhibition on prehistory in the Tardoire Valley and the themed trails in the Vallée de la Renaudie nature reserve. You can therefore make architecture, archaeological themes, nature or events the focus of your stay.

Heritage and events

The Vieux Château was largely rebuilt in the 15th century and retains painted interior features, mullioned windows and loopholes. The building is partially protected as a historic monument. The two painted fireplaces on the first floor have been classified as a Monument historique since 26 December 1985. The Church of Saint-Maurice offers a different architectural accent: it is considered an elegant example of the Romanesque architecture typical of the département.

Below the Chapelle Sainte-Marthe, the Théâtre de Verdure serves as a venue for artistic performances and film screenings. The events on offer depend on the programme; check the latest dates before your visit. Craft events also provide a reason to choose Montbron for a themed trip: since 2013, the commune has taken part in the annual Les Portes du Cuir event, which focuses on leather crafts and the leather industry. Check dates and the programme before your trip.

At the Rencontres de l’Artisanat d’Art in the Vieux Château, around twenty professional craftspeople present their work in a sales exhibition; some stalls also feature demonstrations. The fifth edition took place in 2026. This means that, alongside architectural and church history, arts and crafts and leather offer different cultural themes to explore.

Prehistory in the Tardoire Valley

The Espace Préhistoire André Debénath presents the history of research and prehistoric discoveries in the Tardoire Valley in a permanent exhibition. Information panels and display cases containing original objects and casts explain the subject. The courtyard provides space for activities and experiments, including a painting wall and an area where visitors can practise archaeological excavations.

Two side rooms are used for film screenings and temporary exhibitions; the latter are renewed every two years. The programme also includes children’s workshops held on Wednesdays in July and August, covering topics such as jewellery, flint, fire, engraving and excavation, as well as conferences and special visits to prehistoric sites in the area. Check the latest programme for specific dates and availability. The Cave of Montgaudier, near Vouthon and Montbron, is also part of the area’s archaeological heritage: exceptionally long human occupation has been documented there. Finds include a particularly iconic baton de commandement made from perforated and engraved reindeer antler from the Tardoire Valley.

Nature trails and activities

The Vallée de la Renaudie nature reserve stretches for six kilometres along the river across the communes of Montbron, Écuras and Rouzède. Its diverse habitats are linked to the overlap of limestone and granite soils. Three themed trails offer different focuses: the biodiversity trail is four kilometres long, the geology trail 3.5 kilometres and the water trail three kilometres. The difference between the longest and shortest route is one kilometre; you can also choose according to the nature theme and the distance you want to cover.

Another activity with a stated duration is the canoe-kayak trip from Menet to Montbron: it is 4.5 kilometres long and takes approximately one and a half hours. This gives you a time frame for planning your day, while the nature trails are described by their distances. Operating conditions may change, so check the latest arrangements before setting off.

Mills and dining plans

Fed by the Tardoire, the Moulin de Menet is a typical example of a roller mill. The former communal mill was converted into a flour mill at the end of the 19th century. The Moulin de Chabrot is associated with a different culinary offering: since 2013, it has been home to the Moulin de la Tardoire restaurant, run by Michelin-starred chef Mathieu Brudo. Check current opening arrangements before making specific dining plans.

You can organise your time in Montbron around your interests: for example, architectural and church history, the themes of the permanent exhibition or the three trails of different lengths in the Vallée de la Renaudie. Events and activities with specific dates can be added to your plans once you have checked their latest schedules.
