Chatignac brings together the natural setting of the Coteaux du Montmorélien Natura 2000 site, cycling opportunities and distinctive village sights. The commune is located within the Special Area of Conservation. To get your bearings, it is worth considering the natural landscape and individual destinations separately: the protected area and river landscape define the surroundings, while the parish church, mosaic and mini golf offer specific points of interest in the village. Depending on your interests, you can focus your stay on the landscape, outdoor activities or village details.
Natura 2000 site and habitats
The Coteaux du Montmorélien Natura 2000 site comprises around fifty small hills on chalky or marly limestone soils dating from the Upper Cretaceous. Its habitats include xerothermic dry grasslands, downy oak stands and juniper scrub; locally, there are also alkaline fens or nutrient-poor wet meadows belonging to the Molinion alliance. The site therefore includes both dry, warm locations and wet areas. More than 30 orchid species have been recorded in the calcareous mesophilous or xerophilous grasslands of the Coteaux du Montmorélien. This orchid figure applies to the calcareous grasslands; the fens and wet meadows represent other parts of the habitat diversity. Mesophilous grasslands are found in locations with moderate moisture, while xerophilous grasslands occur in dry conditions; these are two distinct forms of calcareous grassland.
Cycling route along the Maury
If you would like to cycle to Chatignac, the Brossac Nord – Circuit découverte 4B route follows the Maury. It leads to Chatignac and reaches viewpoints on the hills, with ridgelines visible from there. On its way to Chatignac, the Maury winds through the landscape before flowing into the Né, with several branches and wetlands. The Brossac Nord – Circuit exploration 4C also continues as far as Chatignac. If you would like to combine river scenery and viewpoints when choosing a route, these are specific features of the 4B; the 4C offers another route connection to the village.
Village church, mosaic and mini golf
The village has two cultural highlights: Chatignac’s village church is the parish church of Saint-Pierre, and a mosaic depicting a rural scene can be found in the main square. The church and mosaic offer different points of focus—the parish church on the one hand, and an image of rural life on the other. Together, they complement the landscapes and cycling routes with sights directly connected to the village.
Another activity is the Mini golf de Châtignac, a course with seven holes separated by obstacles. Unlike the cycling routes, the focus here is on a single game course. Equipment is not provided, so bring your own. The town hall of Châtignac handles enquiries and reservations. As the reservation arrangements may change, it is best to check with the town hall before your visit.
