Villefagnan offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: a restored windmill, buildings with different historical associations, two routes with their own character, and a food market on Tuesday mornings. For your trip, you can focus on these themes according to your interests in culture, nature or visiting the market.

Windmill and Milling Technology

The “Moulin à vent des « Pierres Blanches »” windmill was restored in 2000 and is the only windmill in the Charente department with sails made of “Toiles.” During a half-hour tour, the miller explains how it works. This makes it possible to plan this activity around a specific time frame and an interest in windmill technology.

Buildings with Different Histories

The Logis des Tours was built in the 15th and 16th centuries. Parts of the complex have been preserved, including an enclosed area, the main building, the entrance portal and the towers. Since 1951, the two old towers, the entrance portal and the adjoining enclosure wall on either side have been listed as historic monuments. The preserved structures and the specific listed parts offer different historical points of reference.

The Temple protestant de Villefagnan represents a different period: it was built in 1875 and inaugurated on October 17 of the same year. Under a decree dated October 26, 1998, the temple, including its interior furnishings, was listed in its entirety as a historic monument. Unlike the specifically named parts of the Logis des Tours, the listing here covers the entire building, including its interior furnishings.

The Conservatoire des Arts et Traditions Populaires presents rural life around 1900 through a recreated Charentais interior. This adds a depiction of everyday life to the historic buildings: the focus is on a furnished interior scene and its connection to rural life at the time.

Routes and Nature

The Sentier de la Ferté is a 5.84-kilometre circular trail marked in yellow, offering panoramic views over the commune of Villefagnan. Its length, markings and circular layout provide concrete points of reference when choosing a route, while the panoramic views take in the commune as a whole.

The Circuit de Bois Breuillac passes through the Bois Breuillac. In the lower section alongside the circuit are agricultural areas that retain the moisture needed to create favourable conditions for the highly endangered snake’s head fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris). Picking the snake’s head fritillary is prohibited. In contrast to the Sentier de la Ferté, the focus here is on the route through the forest and the botanical significance of the adjoining areas.

At the commune level, Villefagnan is part of a Natura 2000 site. This complements the specific features of the routes with a nature-related point of interest for the area as a whole.

Planning a Market Visit and Accommodation

A food market is held at the Halle aux Grains on Tuesday mornings. As market hours may change, check the schedule locally before travelling. When looking for a hotel in Villefagnan, you can first decide whether the windmill and architectural history, a route or a visit to the market will shape your stay.
