Mansle lies in the heart of the Charente Valley, upstream from Angoulême. When planning a stay, there are several different things to discover: riverside trails, fountains in the town, natural attractions and Saint-Léger Church. You can choose based on whether you want to explore the landscape on foot, go for a bike ride, spend time on the water or discover historical details. Each option offers something different, and there is no prescribed order for your days.
The Charente Valley and nature
The “Vallée de la Charente” Natura 2000 site is also classified as a Special Protection Area (SPA). It serves as a year-round resting place for 37 bird species of Community interest. This role as a resting place gives the river valley its own natural appeal, alongside the trails and water activities in Mansle. Visitors who also consider landscapes and protected areas when choosing a destination will find a clear focus here.
Walking and cycling trails
The Prairie de Goué interpretation trail is 4.2 km long and starts at Camping du Champion. It follows the Charente, which can be crossed by chain ferry. The “Balade Nature et Patrimoine” offers a different kind of route: a waymarked circular trail suitable for beginners, hikers and families. The route passes through shady areas and ends at the fuchsia collection in the flower park. This gives you a choice between a trail with a stated length and riverside setting, and a waymarked circular trail with a named destination.
For a two-wheeled outing, Discovery Route No. 34 B is described as a 26 km route along the Charente. The distances make it easy to compare the 4.2 km interpretation trail with the 26 km cycling loop. The “Balade Nature et Patrimoine” has a different appeal: its circular route, shaded sections and destination in the flower park are its defining features.
Water, fountains and views
There is a canoe and kayak centre at the “Champion” site, where you can go canoeing and kayaking on the river. For another activity, the Piscine de la Doue has a 25 m pool approved for competitions. The options therefore include both activities on the Charente and a pool with a specified length and competition approval.
Fountains also add to the opportunities for exploration: on a walk through Mansle-les-Fontaines, visitors can discover around ten fountains. The “Sentier des fontaines” offers a panoramic view over the Charente Valley at the “grandes combes de Puychenin”. The fountains in the town and the viewpoint along this trail offer different ways to enjoy a walk: discovering individual fountains or taking in views over the valley.
Saint-Léger Church and historical details
Saint-Léger Church houses the painting “La Résurrection de la fille de Jaïre”, which is listed as a historic monument. The church portal is also noteworthy: it features one of the rare examples of Gothic capitals decorated with figures. Together, the painting and portal offer two different ways to explore Mansle’s heritage: a named work of art and a rare form of figurative decoration on a church portal.
