Magnac-Sur-Touvre brings together two distinct travel interests: the architectural history of the Church of Saint-Cybard and the Logis de Maumont, as well as the Touvre and its riverside locations. You can therefore plan your stay around either cultural history or river scenery.

Saint-Cybard: Romanesque church and Greek cross plan

The Church of Saint-Cybard is a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Greek cross, with four arms of equal length. The term therefore describes the shape of the church, not just a single architectural feature. By decree dated September 21, 1907, Saint-Cybard was listed as a historic monument. Its style, century and listing date give you three distinct points of reference when exploring the building: its architectural classification, its period and its protected status. If you are particularly interested in religious architecture, the floor plan described here offers a specific focus that goes beyond the general label “Romanesque.”

Maumont and the town’s earlier history

A second historical highlight is the Renaissance Logis de Maumont, located in Magnac-sur-Touvre. It was built on the ruins of an older structure. A surviving tower from that earlier structure served as Magnac-sur-Touvre’s first town hall. Maumont’s history thus brings together different architectural and civic connections: the Renaissance logis, the ruins of an earlier building, and the tower’s former role as a town hall.

Unlike Saint-Cybard, Maumont is not centred on a single architectural form, but on the relationship between a later building and older structures on the same site. This offers a different way to explore the town’s history from that of the clearly dated Romanesque church. If you include historic buildings in your trip, you can therefore consider these two subjects separately: Saint-Cybard, with its cross-shaped floor plan and listed status, and Maumont, with its Renaissance logis and the recorded history of the older tower. These facts describe the history and architectural connections; they do not prescribe a particular order for visiting.

Green space and riverside areas along the Touvre

La Plaine de Jeu is a green space in Magnac-sur-Touvre intended for recreation and discovering the river. It offers a different focus from the church and the logis: here, the emphasis is on a green space and the Touvre. La Maillerie is another area along the banks of the Touvre. It lies at the junction of Touvre, Magnac-sur-Touvre and Ruelle-sur-Touvre. In August 2023, La Maillerie was listed among the places to discover along the Touvre and featured information panels. The two locations therefore offer different perspectives on the river: La Plaine de Jeu as a green space in Magnac-sur-Touvre, and La Maillerie as a riverside area at the junction of three localities.

If you are planning a stay by the river, bear in mind the specific conditions along its banks: private owners may allow or prohibit fishing on the stretches of river they own. They are also not required to provide access along the riverbank. So do not assume that a riverside route will be passable all the way through. This restriction affects both the question of possible fishing spots and the use of a riverside passage; it is more useful to bear in mind when planning around the Touvre than to assume generally that you can follow every stretch of riverbank.

Weekly market and finding accommodation

A weekly market is held on Place de la Mairie every Wednesday morning. If your stay includes a Wednesday, you can use the market as a date-specific point of reference. Check the details in advance, as market times and vendors may change.

When choosing accommodation, use your trip’s main interests as a guide: would you mainly like to explore the architectural history of Saint-Cybard and Maumont, or would you prefer to focus more on the Touvre, its green spaces and riverside areas? This keeps your decision aligned with your interests without assuming a particular location or a short walk to the sights.
