Saint-Joachim comprises seven islands, including Île de Fédrun, which is surrounded by canals. The themes range from local craft history to a historic interior; for exploring the landscape, you can choose walking and cycling trails as well as a guided canal boat trip. Which of these aspects you focus on depends on whether you are more interested in Brière history or in trails and waterways.

Brière Culture and History

The Maison de la Mariée tells the story of the women of Saint-Joachim who made bridal crowns. It bears the “Musée de France” designation and is described as the largest public museum of bridal bells. For those interested in culture, the link to the women of Saint-Joachim offers a striking introduction to local craft history: the museum’s theme connects bridal crowns with the work of the women who made them.

The Chaumière Briéronne offers a different perspective: it displays a traditional Brière interior, showing what one might have looked like around 1900. Together with the story of the bridal crowns, it creates a contrast between a specific craft and a possible historic domestic setting. The Chaumière can only be visited as part of a guided tour booked in advance. The guided tour “Île était une fois Fédrun” includes both museums, is free of charge and available by reservation only. As program details vary by season, check the tour before your trip.

The Notre-Dame du Bon Secours chapel also offers a distinct perspective on local history. It was built in 1762, following the collective wish of the many sailors and people working in seafaring in the Brière. This story offers a maritime perspective on Brière culture alongside the bridal crowns and the interior. The sailors’ and seafarers’ shared initiative makes the chapel’s history a subject in its own right.

Fédrun by Water

Chez Chantal et Jacky offers one-hour guided boat trips on the canals of Île de Fédrun. Points of interest include the “Morta,” a petrified tree estimated to be around 5,000 years old. The one-hour duration helps with planning your time; the trip is also a different way to experience Fédrun’s landscape than visiting a museum. Check the provider’s availability before your trip.

Two Routes, Two Itineraries

The “La Brière des îles” cycling route runs for about ten kilometres through the commune of Saint-Joachim and almost entirely around Île de Fédrun. Check the route and details before setting off. Another option is the “Les îles du marais de Brière par Saint-Malo-de-Guersac & Saint-Joachim” route, which offers ten kilometres of walking trails through Saint-Joachim and Saint-Malo-de-Guersac. Conditions on the walking trails may vary by season.

Both routes are of a similar length, but take different paths: the cycling route runs almost entirely around Fédrun, while the walking route passes through two communes. The options therefore differ not only in activity but also in their geographical focus. If you want to plan around Fédrun, the cycling route offers a different point of reference from the route connecting Saint-Joachim with Saint-Malo-de-Guersac.

Plan for Seasonal Offers

The Maison du Parc on Île de Fédrun sells regional products and products from the Parc naturel régional de Brière during the season. Bear in mind that sales are seasonal when planning your stay, and check availability before your trip.
