Saint-Viaud sits on Mont-Scobrit, overlooking the mouth of the Loire. You can explore the area in different ways: take a short loop around the lake, follow a longer hiking or cycling route through the bocage, or visit individual cultural landmarks, each with its own history. You can shape your stay around the landscape, outdoor activities or cultural heritage.
Lake and trails: two ways to enjoy the outdoors
Saint-Viaud Lake is a 4-hectare natural area that is open year-round. The Tour du lac de Saint-Viaud is a 1.5-kilometre circular trail. It is accessible to people with reduced mobility and to families with pushchairs or small bicycles. The route is approved by the Département and is part of the “Balade à Roulettes®” network of the Comité Départemental de la Randonnée Pédestre. The lake itself remains open year-round; seasonal facilities may vary.
At the municipal lake, TSN44 offers kneeboarding, wakeboarding, water skiing and wakeskating. The large cable tow course is circular and 560 metres long. This provides a watersports option alongside the walking route. As operating arrangements may change, check the latest information from TSN44 before visiting.
If you’re looking for a longer route, consider the Circuit des Hauteurs: this 13.4-kilometre circular hiking and cycling route takes you around the commune and to its viewpoints. It follows rural paths through the bocage and offers panoramas and viewpoints over the mouth of the Loire. By comparison, the 1.5-kilometre Tour du lac is the shorter loop by the lake; the two routes therefore differ significantly in length and landscape.
Windmills, a villa and another cultural landmark
The Moulin de la Ramée was probably built in 1567 and still retains its internal mechanisms and a single pair of millstones. It is listed as a historic monument, including its mechanisms. These surviving technical features give the building a distinct historical dimension alongside its protected status.
The Villa du Plessis-Grimaud tells a different architectural story: it was built in 1846 for the widow Carroux on the hill of a former manor house overlooking the Loire. The villa is listed as a historic monument under a listing order dated 16 April 1997. The Fuye of Château du Plessis-Mareil is also listed as a historic monument; the order dates from 1 March 1978.
In the Vallon de la Pivre, at the foot of the church, stands a monumental sundial. It adds another distinctive cultural landmark to the area’s historic buildings. Together, the mill, villa, fuye and sundial offer different ways to discover Saint-Viaud’s history, alongside its trails and lake.
There are several clearly distinct options for planning your day: a short loop by the water, a longer circuit along rural paths, watersports or individual historic landmarks. You can choose which ones shape your stay based on the distance you want to cover and your interests.
