Frossay offers a range of highlights for a trip: nature watching, cycling and water activities, as well as local history. The Menhir des Pins is 2.60 metres high and points to Neolithic settlement between around 4000 and 2000 BC. The trails also vary: some lead to information boards and historical themes, while others combine exercise with opportunities for fishing or birdwatching. When planning, it is worth matching these interests to the relevant access conditions.
Wetlands and Birdwatching
The Massereau and Migron reserves extend across Frossay and Le Pellerin. Together, they cover almost 700 hectares of protected wetlands in the Loire estuary. The reserves attract migratory birds; in winter, species you may see include Eurasian teal, greylag geese and brent geese. The areas are not open for independent visits. However, the Département or its partners regularly organise guided tours. As availability should be checked before your trip, it is a good idea to look at current visiting options before planning your day around them.
Another way to explore nature is the Circuit du Carnet: this 9-kilometre circular walking trail runs along the Canal maritime de Basse-Loire and offers opportunities for fishing and birdwatching. It is marked in yellow and suitable for families. The Circuit de l’Île Adet, by contrast, is accessible only during dry periods; after wet weather, check access locally. Keep this seasonal restriction in mind when choosing a day for your walk.
Cycling and Water Activities
La Loire à Vélo is a developed, signposted cycling route. At Quai Vert in the village of Migron in Frossay, you will also find water-based activities, nature walks, events and bicycle rental. The visitor programme focuses on discovering local natural areas and heritage. This lets you include different interests in your day’s plans without treating the offerings as interchangeable: the route is a cycling option, while Quai Vert brings together a range of activities and programmes.
Those wishing to focus on rowing can visit the Club Nautique du Migron on the Canal maritime de la Basse-Loire. It offers recreational, introductory, competitive and ergometer rowing. These different formats provide a useful guide when choosing an activity. For planning, it is also helpful to treat cycling routes, walks and water activities as separate options and check the conditions for each.
Local History Over Two Kilometres and Beyond
The Promenade Patrimoine Le Migron/La Roche is a two-kilometre heritage walk. Nine information boards cover the fluvial, maritime and human history of the two villages. Compared with the 9-kilometre Circuit du Carnet, it is a shorter route with a different focus: here, the villages’ history takes centre stage, while the other route offers fishing and birdwatching along the canal.
The Église Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens is also part of Frossay’s history. Today’s church replaced an earlier building erected around 1450. Its façade features a statue of Saint Peter in Chains, created by Jean Fréour in 1993. The Écluse du Carnet is one of the canal’s three most important lock structures and a destination for nature lovers. Historical interest here ranges from church architecture and sculpture to lock structures.
Getting There and Planning Your Accommodation
Quai Vert is accessible by bus: from Nantes, take LILA 1 to Place de Gaulle in Frossay, then LILA 16 to Le Migron. From Saint-Nazaire, take LILA 16 to Le Migron. From there, it is a five-minute walk in either case. Check the timetable before setting off so you can factor the bus connections into your day’s plans.
Bear in mind that guided tours of the reserves are not available for independent visits and that the Circuit de l’Île Adet is open only during dry periods. The two-kilometre promenade and the nine-kilometre circular trail also offer different distances and themes. This way, you can plan your stay around specific interests rather than treating every outing as the same kind of activity.
