Crossac combines hiking trails with megalithic history, architecture, and natural and cultural landscapes. The hiking trails start in the town center at the parking lot by the Calvaire. This gives you a specific starting point for your plans; check local parking regulations before you arrive, as they may change. To help you choose, start with a simple question: do you want the hike itself to be the main focus, or would you rather plan your stay around architecture and landscape?

Hiking and Megaliths

The Dolmen de la Barbière is a partially collapsed, almost ten-meter-long covered megalithic structure on a rocky outcrop. Its capstone is supported by three standing stones, and its weight is estimated at 25 tonnes. The capstone and its supports illustrate the covered structure, while its dimensions give an idea of the scale of the site. The dolmen can be discovered especially well on a hike. Check current access conditions before visiting.

The Menhir du Bois Hoël is also one of Crossac’s megaliths. A menhir is a single upright stone, distinguishing it from the covered dolmen structure. Another hiking option is the Boucle de Croazac, which includes a detour to see the Château de Lorieux. The dolmen focuses on an individual megalithic monument, while the Boucle centers on a trail with a specific detour to the château. This lets you choose your hiking focus according to the cultural theme that interests you.

Architectural History Across Several Periods

The Manoir de Bel Ebat dates from 1735. The present-day church of Saint Jean Baptiste in Crossac was built between 1862 and 1864; its 44-meter-high tower dates from 1874. The manor house provides an earlier historical reference point; for the church, you can distinguish between the date the building was constructed and the later date of its tower. These three structures therefore offer different historical points of interest rather than being reduced to a single shared construction date.

Natural and Cultural Landscape

The heathland of Crossac is home to sensitive animal and plant life. The bocage landscape has significant cultural-historical and landscape value worth preserving. Bocage generally refers to a cultural landscape divided by hedgerows. The two landscape themes are therefore distinct: the heathland is notable for its sensitive habitats, while the bocage is valued for its cultural landscape. This offers different perspectives for exploring Crossac’s natural and cultural interests.

Accommodation and Regional Cuisine

The Manoir de Bel Ebat offers guest rooms and takeaway brunch. The table d’hôte serves dishes made with regional produce. Before booking, ask the manor house about the current availability of guest rooms and dining options.
