Clisson brings together heritage, designed landscapes and activities along the Sèvre Nantaise. Parc Henri IV is a public green space and a place to relax in the historic centre, on the riverbank. It is suited to families, walks and picnics, providing a distinct green focal point alongside the town’s historic sites.

Green spaces and designed landscapes

Domaine de la Garenne-Lemot is an exceptional estate created by sculptor Frédéric Lemot in the early 19th century. It lies on a steep slope in the Sèvre valley. The estate’s gardener’s house contains a free interpretation centre open to everyone, as well as a visitor centre and a gift shop. The interpretation centre opened in 2019. Visitors interested in the estate’s designed landscape can visit the free interpretation centre in the gardener’s house.

Church history and culture

Ancienne Eglise Saint-Jacques was built in the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, it served as a stop for pilgrims travelling on foot to Santiago de Compostela. Its architectural history and pilgrimage tradition give the site a clear historical connection. At the same time, the church is preserved and brought to life as a cultural venue with an annual programme. Clisson is also classified as a remarkable heritage site. Those interested in the town’s history will therefore find both a medieval building with a pilgrimage history and an ongoing cultural use here.

Music site and waterside activities

The Site du Hellfest covers 21 hectares and is located near Clisson’s historic centre. Its stage designs are associated with metal music. Outside the festival’s setup and dismantling periods, the site is open and free to visit year-round. These periods generally take place for about a month before and after the event. Check the latest information before your visit, as seasonal closures may change.

On the Sèvre Nantaise in the Vallée de Clisson, Canoë Kayak de Clisson offers paddling trips. Options include canoeing, kayaking, boat trips and stand-up paddleboarding. These activities differ from a visit to the heritage sites; for planning, the main things to check are opening times and whether a reservation is required. Check both before your trip rather than assuming a particular date or availability.

Market and getting there

A market takes place beneath the Halle de Clisson every Tuesday and Friday morning. If you want to plan your stay around a market day, check the date again before your visit. This gives the market a different scheduling consideration from the Hellfest site, whose access depends on the festival’s setup and dismantling periods, or the paddling trips, for which opening times and reservations should be checked.

For travelling by train, the Château de Clisson provides a useful point of reference: the station is 500 metres from the château. Check train connections before your trip. Plan your rail journey, then choose places to visit according to your interests.
