Le Transformateur offers a walk among grazed meadows, woods, orchards, steel structures reddened by age and graffiti-covered walls. Natural areas, woodland and the visible traces of steel and paint together form the setting, making this a place where a walk through the landscape meets a striking architectural contrast. For planning purposes, this offers a different focus from the canal paths or the landscape of the Circuit de Gargantua.

Independent visits, as well as guided tours for individuals and groups on request, are available; allow 90 minutes for each format. If you plan to take a guided tour, request it in advance.

Étang Aumée and walking trails

Étang Aumée is a 110-hectare body of water within the territories of Saint-Nicolas-de-Redon and Fégréac. It is designated a Natura 2000 site. At the Étang, there is a developed beach, a volleyball court, picnic tables, a windsurfing area and restroom facilities. These amenities provide a practical setting for different kinds of visits, from picnics to windsurfing. There are also walking trails near Étang Aumée.

This gives you several options: walks in the area around the water and facilities at the Étang itself. The developed beach and windsurfing area are distinct from a walk, while the volleyball court and picnic tables are other features of the site. This makes it easier to decide whether to focus on walking, spending time by the water or having a picnic.

Exploring the Canal de Nantes à Brest

Along the banks of the Canal de Nantes à Brest, paths as far as Saint-Nicolas-de-Redon are suitable for cycling and walking. The section between Nantes and Saint-Nicolas-de-Redon has 18 locks. This figure refers specifically to this stretch of canal and adds an architectural dimension to the opportunity to explore the banks on foot or by bike.

Near the Butte du Rouge, old metal boats can be spotted on the towpath along the canal. They are 1901-model pontoon bridge boats. Their location and designation make a walk along the canal an opportunity to notice a specific detail of its history.

Hiking and local history

The Circuit de Gargantua is a 7 km yellow-marked hike starting in Saint-Nicolas-de-Redon. It passes through sunken lanes, woods and marshland, and by Roche Cado, also known as Pierre de Gargantua, near the village of Cado. By contrast, the Circuit is the clearly measured hiking option; the canal offers both walking and cycling. Check the current route information and markings before setting out.

The Chapelle Saint-Joseph also connects history with an annual event. It was built after the 1870 war at the initiative of Abbé Dubigeon. The association Les amis de la Chapelle Saint Joseph, founded in 1986, made its restoration and revival possible. Festivities are held at the chapel every year on the last weekend of August. If you want to plan your visit around them, check the exact event date in advance.

Another local heritage feature is the bread oven in La Provotaie: it is one of three bread ovens in the territory of Saint-Nicolas-de-Redon. Together with the chapel, it offers a different perspective on local history from the waterside paths or landscape routes. Which of these themes you focus on depends on whether you are looking for a hike, a walk, a cultural site or a visit to Étang Aumée.
