Saint-Pois combines granite known as “Bleu de Vire” with cycling and walking trails, and a history shaped by granite quarrying. The Church of Saint-Louis and the Château de Saint-Pois also offer cultural points of interest. When planning, it is worth distinguishing the options by activity and route length: mountain bike routes, a longer route along the Sée Valley, and a walking trail through valleys with ponds and springs each offer a different perspective on Saint-Pois.

Mountain biking

“À la découverte du Château de la Marquise” is a 4.5-kilometre mountain bike route starting in Saint-Pois. Another option is “Au contact du Granit Bleu”: this mountain bike route is 17 kilometres long and passes through the village of Saint-Pois, which is built from granite. The granite is known as “Bleu de Vire”—a name that also plays a part in the village’s history. With routes of 4.5 and 17 kilometres, there are two different distances to choose from. Check the route details and trail conditions before setting off.

Saint-Pois is also on the 50-kilometre Route du Granit, which runs along the Sée Valley. This is a different route from the two mountain bike trails. Panoramic views over the Sée Valley offer another connection to the local landscape. The designated cycling routes and the views of the valley can therefore be considered as different aspects of the surrounding area, rather than combined into a single route.

Walking trail and waterscapes

The “Le Papillon au fil de l'eau” walking trail passes old washhouses and the remains of watercress gardens. It also runs through valleys dotted with ponds and small springs. Along the way, built features and traces of former watercress cultivation meet a landscape shaped by water. For walkers, this is a different way to discover Saint-Pois and its surroundings than by mountain bike: here, the route and changing landscape features take centre stage.

Granite history and heritage

Saint-Pois became an early centre for quarrying “Bleu de Vire” granite. The granite also characterises the village, which is built from this material and is crossed by the “Au contact du Granit Bleu” mountain bike route. The name therefore appears both in the village’s history and in the route description. Alongside views of the Sée Valley, visitors can discover a tangible connection to the village’s history and the building material used there.

The Church of Saint-Louis houses a granite holy water font and a 15th-century PietĂ . The two works offer different points of interest: the font reflects the material for which the village is known, while the PietĂ  has its own historical context. The church brings these two features together in one place, without requiring any additional itinerary.

The château and themed tours

The Château de Saint-Pois is privately owned; its remarkable architecture can be seen from wooded areas. Guided tours are available by prior reservation for pre-arranged groups of eight or more. Themed tours are also part of the cultural events programme; individual events may vary. If you are planning a group tour, bear in mind that a reservation is required and there is a minimum group size. The opportunity to see the château from outside and the guided tour offering are separate aspects of the site.

A farm visit as another option

A tourism listing updated on 14 April 2021 describes daily visitor receptions at the Le Petit Saint-Poisien farm. Visitors can learn about the farm’s products and animals; goat’s cheese is made on site. As the listing dates from 2021, check current visiting arrangements and production before travelling. You can consider a visit to the farm as a possible addition and plan around the confirmed visiting conditions.
