La Lucerne-D'outremer Abbey is one of the oldest Premonstratensian abbeys in Normandy. Here, monastic history, art and traces of past work meet paths through the forest. The abbey was designated a French “Monument historique” in 1928.

Abbey, church and industrial history

For a self-guided visit, follow a signposted tour through the abbey. Information panels explain the canons’ daily life, as well as the restoration and preservation work at the site. The visit thus focuses both on former monastic life and on the work involved in preserving the site. Check the latest visitor information in advance.

The former use of the abbey church also tells a story of change: from 1794 to 1834, the former abbey church housed a spinning mill; it was then converted into a marble workshop. The abbey mill offers another trace of the site’s working history. It was rebuilt around 1837 and fitted with four overshot waterwheels. These were used to produce flour from wheat, barley and buckwheat.

Notre-Dame Church, music and workshops

Notre-Dame Church is thought to date from the 13th century and possibly in part from as early as the 10th century, as recent discoveries during restoration work suggest. Notable features include statues and paintings. The dating is expressed cautiously: the discoveries made during restoration work have prompted consideration of an even earlier origin.

The abbey offers workshops for school groups throughout the year; specific dates may vary. Musical events add to the cultural program. The Friends of the Abbey association holds a classical music festival at the abbey in summer and regularly organizes other musical events. If a concert is the reason for your visit, check the exact event dates in advance.

Forest paths and village walk

The paths offer another way to explore the community. La Lucerne-D'outremer has circular routes, and local paths run through the forest. The 370-hectare private forest is planted mainly with oaks, chestnut trees, beeches and conifers. Deer and wild boar live there, but sightings are not guaranteed. When planning a specific route, take current trail conditions into account.

For riders, the “Route des Abbayes à cheval” begins at 3 L'Abbaye in La Lucerne-D'outremer. The route was designed specifically for riders, with paved sections kept to a minimum. A guided village walk with local village guides is another way to get to know the area. Check locally in advance to see whether this option is available.

Local highlights range from the abbey’s history and industrial uses to art, music and paths through the forest. You can plan your stay around specific visiting and event dates, and check the availability of a riding route or village walk.
