Montjoie-Saint-Martin brings together a major place of remembrance, church and local history, and walking routes offering views of the bay. The American Cemetery can be visited independently and free of charge every day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; check visiting hours before your visit. The graves of 4,410 soldiers lie across 14 hectares. A memorial monument, a chapel, and a wall bearing the names of 498 missing soldiers complete the site. The combination of graves and the wall of the missing represents different forms of remembrance. You can tailor your visit to your interests: remembrance, historic buildings, or exploring the landscape on foot.
Places of Remembrance and Their Dedications
Another memorial site is the Carré Militaire Marocain in the churchyard of Saint-Martin church in the centre of Montjoie-Saint-Martin. It honours eight Moroccan volunteers. In 1999, a memorial monument and eight individually designed Muslim grave markers were erected there. Its dedication is clearly distinct from that of the military cemetery: the Carré focuses on the eight volunteers being honoured, while the cemetery contains the graves of 4,410 soldiers. Their different scales and dedications give both places their own place in the history of remembrance.
Churches, Pilgrimage History and Lordship
Saint-Martin church was rebuilt in the 18th century, recently restored, and preserves several protected features. The rebuilding and restoration mark different points in the church’s architectural history. Saint-Denis chapel adds an earlier pilgrimage connection to the historical picture: it welcomed pilgrims from Maine. Manoir du Bois Mainfray is the only manor in the canton with a square courtyard and bears witness to local lordship. Together, the church, chapel, and manor offer insights into different historical themes: architectural development, past pilgrimages, and local lordship.
Walking Routes and Guided Village Walks
The GR22 and paths along the Beuvron Valley pass through Montjoie-Saint-Martin and offer views of the bay. Guided village walks with local guides are also available. The two formats have different focuses: the walking routes foreground the journey and views of the bay, while the village walks include commentary from the guides. An orientation board and picnic areas round out a visit to Montjoie-Saint-Martin. You can choose between routes with landscape views and a guided exploration of the village.
Another Reason to Visit
The Fête de la pomme et la châtaigne is also one of the events held in Montjoie-Saint-Martin. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the dates in advance. When looking for a holiday rental, you can use the reason for your trip as your starting point and compare the details of each accommodation with your own plans.
