Néville-sur-Mer combines coastal history with distinctive details at the Church of Saint-Martin and the Manoir d’Herclat. The Fontaine Saint-Benoît and a coastal hiking trail also give the town a range of different facets.

Romanesque church and historic furnishings

The Church of Saint-Martin preserves 11th-century Romanesque architecture in its south portal. Two loopholes and a bas-relief depicting the charity of Saint Martin are part of this portal; three firing windows are also preserved on the north side. The military-looking openings and religious imagery form a striking contrast within the surviving architecture.

The church’s furnishings also include an ensemble of a high altar and altarpiece from the second half of the 18th century, which was protected as an object in 1975. The ensemble includes a rayed glory and two sacristy doors; the tabernacle is in storage. Those interested in historic church art will therefore find both older architectural forms and later furnishings here.

Manoir d’Herclat and Jean-Baptiste Michel Pontus

The Manoir d’Herclat was built in the late 15th or early 16th century. The rectangular building has a double gate for vehicles and pedestrians as its only entrance. Its period of construction and distinctive gate give the estate a unique architectural character.

The Manoir is also connected to the life of Jean-Baptiste Michel Pontus, who was born there on June 19, 1763. Pope Pius XI beatified him on October 17, 1926, together with the other September Martyrs. The history of the place can therefore be explored not only through its buildings, but also through a person and his religious significance.

Batterie Blankenese: wartime history and coastal erosion

During the Second World War, Batterie Blankenese was a German artillery position. Its armament included four British Vickers 94 mm M/39 anti-aircraft guns. On the morning of June 18, 1944, the crew blew up the installation as part of Plan Henrich, activated that day, and withdrew toward the “fortress” of Cherbourg.

The bunkers’ present location also tells the story of a changing coastline: severe coastal erosion has left most of them on the beach today. The battery originally stood behind the dunes. Comparing these two locations makes the change in the coastline clear without confusing its former position with its present one.

Fontaine Saint-Benoît and activities by the sea

The Fontaine Saint-Benoît lies in a hollow near the coast, on the grounds of a former abbey. The oratory and enclosure date from 1897; the three basins symbolize the Trinity. The small spring is said never to run dry, even when its flow is modest. The site thus brings together religious design, water and its historical connection to the former abbey grounds.

For outdoor activity, the “De la pointe de Néville à Gouberville” hiking trail is a specific option: it is 11 kilometres long, rated moderate and takes about three hours. The “Néville-sur-Mer - Eglise” bus stop provides access to the trail. Check the current bus timetable and route before setting out. Coastal activities also include shore fishing, fishing with a rod and fishing among the rocks.

Choose your stay based on your interests

When choosing accommodation, it helps to weigh up your priorities. The church portal, historic furnishings and Manoir will appeal to travellers interested in architecture and local history; the battery offers a way to explore the history of the Second World War and the changing coastline. If you prefer to spend your time outdoors, you can consider the hiking trail and the fishing opportunities. The stated duration of about three hours for the hike is a helpful reference point when planning your day.
