Fort du Roule: history and views
The Musée de la Libération is located in Fort du Roule. The present fort was rebuilt under Napoleon III between 1853 and 1857 and stands 117 metres high. On 6 June 1954, it was inaugurated as the Musée de la Guerre et de la Libération. These different dates belong to different chapters of its history: its reconstruction in the 19th century and its later inauguration as a museum.
The Musée de la Libération’s collection features objects that illustrate the daily lives of civilians and military personnel during the Second World War. The grounds also offer a viewpoint overlooking Cherbourg-en-Cotentin and the sea. This visit therefore combines historical themes with views of the city and its maritime surroundings.
Art, cultural trail and crafts
The Musée Thomas Henry has 300 paintings and sculptures dating from the 15th to the 20th century. Jean-François Millet features particularly prominently in the collection: the artist’s works form the second-largest collection of their kind in France, after that of the Musée d’Orsay.
