Between bocage loops, a trail through undergrowth filled with daffodils and places of remembrance, Le Tourneur offers a range of ways to enjoy a stay. To help you plan, choose from walking trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels, as well as mountain biking routes. There is also local history, religious traditions and local legends to discover.
Bocage Countryside and Daffodils
Le Tourneur is known for its bocage landscapes, particularly along the loops of the Courbençon. For a closer connection with nature, take the “Le sentier des jonquilles” walking trail. It starts at the Aire du Moulin-Pinel picnic area in Le Tourneur and passes through undergrowth where wild daffodils grow. The trail is 3.3 kilometres long and rated easy. The Moulin Pinel picnic area is located in Le Tourneur, in Souleuvre en Bocage.
Daffodil growing is also part of the area’s history: it inspired the first spring festival of the Bocage virois. The daffodil theme thus features in the name and description of the walking trail, as well as in the area’s cultural history.
Walking Trails by Length and Difficulty
Other walking trails in Le Tourneur include the “Circuit des lavoirs” and “La vallée de la Souleuvre”. The “La vallée de la Souleuvre” route starts in the village, is 7.2 kilometres long and rated moderate. “La balade des écrevisses” also starts in Le Tourneur; this moderate walk is 4.8 kilometres long.
The walks listed therefore differ in both length and rating: the 3.3-kilometre “Le sentier des jonquilles” is classified as easy, while the two longer alternatives are rated moderate. When choosing a walk, you can take into account this combination of route length and stated difficulty. Check the conditions on each route before setting out.
Mountain Biking Routes
There are also routes with different profiles for mountain biking. “La Vallée de la Souleuvre” starts in Le Tourneur, is 4.64 kilometres long and rated very easy. “Le Mont Chauve” also starts in the village, covers 26.77 kilometres and is classified as difficult. The routes differ considerably in both length and rating. Check trail conditions before setting out.
The walking and mountain biking routes can be compared by activity, length and stated difficulty. The specific details make it easier to choose an option that suits your plans, without conflating the different trails into a single route.
Places of Remembrance and Local Stories
An important date in the area’s history is 31 July 1944: during the battles for liberation, the church in Le Tourneur was set on fire that day and again on 1 and 2 August. A memorial stele erected at the Porte aux Bissons commemorates the events of the liberation and those who took part in liberating the commune. The Chapelle Saint-Quentin adds a religious and popular tradition to this historical setting. It is dedicated to a saint associated with healing.
Le Tourneur is also linked to local legends and mysteries through the Château des Noyers, described as a haunted castle. Another local connection leads to the hamlet of Feuillet: it gave its name to the family from which the novelist and playwright Octave Feuillet descended. Together, these themes represent different facets of the area, from the dated events of the liberation to religious traditions, literature and legends.
