Pennedepie beach follows the rhythm of the tides: it disappears at high tide, and swimming is only possible at low tide. This distinctive feature shapes a visit to the beach, while the Bois du Breuil coastal forest, the Church of Saint-Georges and Manoir d’Apreval offer other points of interest. If you are considering Pennedepie as a place to stay, you can base your choice on whether the coastal landscape, church architecture or regional apple products matter most to you. For beach plans, you will need to coordinate separately with the tides.
Beach, tides and protected nature
Pennedepie beach is part of the Seine Estuary and Lower Seine Marshes Natura 2000 site. At low tide, it serves as a feeding area for wading birds. At high tide, the beach disappears, so swimming is only possible at low tide. Check the tides if you are planning a swim, so your visit coincides with the tide.
The path along the beach leads into the heart of the Seine estuary and makes it possible to discover marine flora and fauna along the shore. The Maison de l’Estuaire also regularly organizes trips to the beach. Check the dates and availability of these trips in advance.
Another natural highlight is Bois du Breuil, a coastal forest near Pennedepie acquired by the Conservatoire du littoral. The protected site covers 120.2 hectares and is open to the public. Check local conditions before your visit.
The Church of Saint-Georges and its architecture
The Church of Saint-Georges stands out for its imposing tower, topped by a slender bell tower. The reason for its unusual appearance remains unclear; no relevant archives have been found. Access to the church is via 23 stone steps. Inside, you can view the stained-glass windows. Take the steps into account when planning your visit.
Manoir d’Apreval: orchards and production
Manoir d’Apreval has 25 hectares of organically farmed standard apple orchards. They produce pure apple juice, three cuvées of cider, Pommeau, as well as various blends and vintage bottlings of Calvados Pays d’Auge. This visit focuses on the orchards and their products.
The tours trace the process from apple to juice extraction, fermentation and distillation, and on to the 18th-century half-timbered cellars. The visits include a tasting. Seasonally, the Manoir also offers picnic baskets of regional products, which can be enjoyed beneath the apple trees.
Getting there and beach access
To reach Manoir d’Apreval, turn left in Pennedepie after the stop sign, then turn left again after a further 100 metres. Then follow the signs for cars or buses. The beach can only be reached on foot via Rue de la Mer.
