Argences offers several different reasons to visit: the milling history of the Moulin de la Porte, the surviving apse wall of Saint-Jean Church, a Thursday morning market and the “Les Côteaux de la Muance” circular trail. Cultural history, a regular market day and a trail with panoramic views over the Caen plain come together here.

The Moulin de la Porte and the Muance

The Moulin de la Porte is the oldest and best-preserved of the mills powered for almost a millennium by the Muance, a tributary of the Dives. The Moulin was founded in the 11th century by Fécamp Abbey to grind wheat. Read the two time references on different scales: almost a millennium describes the mills along the river, while the 11th century dates the founding of the Moulin de la Porte.

Groups can visit the Moulin throughout the year by booking in advance with the Val ès dunes Tourist Office. If you are planning a visit, arrange your booking with them beforehand.

Saint-Jean: priory and surviving apse wall

In the 13th century, Saint-Jean Church was a priory inhabited by around ten monks. Today, only the apse wall remains. The bell tower was blown up by the Germans on 20 July 1944; the rest of the building was destroyed in the bombings of July and August 1944. The site’s history thus encompasses both the medieval priory and the destruction of the summer of 1944.

Another point of interest is Square Docteur Paul Derrien: a bust stands there on the site of his former home. Together with the church and the Moulin, this square adds another detail of the local landscape to the historical sites.

Thursday market and circular trail

More than 30 vendors attend the Argences market on Thursday mornings. Products include charcuterie, cheese, flowers, fruit and vegetables, as well as takeaway food. The market offers a distinct experience alongside the historical sites, centred on a specific day of the week and a wide range of goods. The number and mix of vendors may change; if you are coming for a particular product, check in advance.

The “Les Côteaux de la Muance” circular trail passes through the centre of Argences and follows the Muance. It also climbs to the heights, offering panoramic views over the Caen plain. The named circular trail therefore brings together two different landscape features: the river and views across the plain. For planning your day, the trail differs from the market: the route and views define the hike, while the market centres on Thursday morning and its range of goods.
