La Croupte can be explored through its church, spring and trails. A small path leads downhill from the Église Saint-Martin to the washhouse and the Fontaine aux guenilles; there is also the “Fervaques, un patrimoine sauvegardé” walking trail. This brings together a specifically described route to a local site and a walking route with its own directions. Old quarries are another local point of interest.
Église Saint-Martin and its history
The Église Saint-Martin was listed as a historic monument by decree dated December 30, 1986. The protection also covers the choir’s stucco decoration. This means that a specific part of the interior is protected, in addition to the church building itself. The church dates from the 15th century and the second half of the 18th century. These dates place its construction history in two widely separated periods. Visitors interested in religious architecture will find two distinct points of interest: the span of time and the specifically protected choir decoration.
Washhouse, spring and local tradition
A small path leads downhill from the Église Saint-Martin to the washhouse and the miraculous spring, the Fontaine aux guenilles. Saint Laurent, Saint Fiacre and Saint Martin are invoked at the spring. The three names bring the local devotional tradition to life and add a cultural context to the walk. A 2020 municipal bulletin mentions a sign at the washhouse with information about the ritual. Check during your visit to see whether it is still there.
The old quarries are another historic point of interest in La Croupte. Together with the church, spring and washhouse, they show that the village is defined by more than a single building. To distinguish the different points of interest, you can consider the descent to the spring as a specific local walk and the quarries as a separate theme.
Walking trail and route choices
The “Fervaques, un patrimoine sauvegardé” walking trail is marked in yellow. One section is described in particularly specific terms: cross a stream over a bridge, then go 20 metres to the right and walk uphill along a path. This sequence of bridge, turn to the right and ascent helps with navigation along the section described. Trail markings and conditions can change, so check the current signage before setting out.
A different route option is the fourth stage of “La Chevauchée du Pays d’Auge à la Seine”. It leads from Notre-Dame-de-Courson to the miraculous waters of La Croupte’s spring, then continues towards Fervaques. The two descriptions have different emphases: the walking trail focuses on yellow markings and a specific section of the route, while the stage description focuses on the starting point, the spring as a destination and the continuation towards Fervaques. This distinction may help you decide which type of route guidance best suits your plans.
A cultural note from 2024
