Ardenne Abbey stands at the highest point of the Caen plain. Its construction phases date back to the 13th, 16th, 17th and 18th centuries; some parts are classified as a historic monument, while others are listed as a historic monument. The construction phases and heritage status offer two different perspectives on the abbey: one places it across several centuries, while the other identifies its different levels of protection.

The Abbey and Remembrance

A memorial at the abbey commemorates the execution of Canadian soldiers during the fighting in June 1944, at the site where it took place. The abbey is also part of the Canadian Remembrance Route. This route commemorates 500,000 Canadian soldiers who fought twice in the 20th century to bring freedom to the French people. The memorial links remembrance to the specific location; the route places it within a broader Canadian commemorative context.

A municipal agenda from 2022 describes La Canadienne as a route through Authie and Saint-Contest, dedicated to the Canadian liberators. An event notice from September 2022 describes the La Canadienne road race as an annual event and names Saint-Germain-La-Blanche-Herbe as its starting point. If you are planning your trip around the race, check the specific event dates in advance.

Visits and Cultural Programme

Free guided tours provide access to the inside of the abbey church. The abbey gardens can be visited freely and free of charge during opening hours. Historical tours of the abbey are offered on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 14:30 and 16:00 during the Easter and summer holidays. As opening hours and seasonal tour dates may change, check both before your visit. When planning your day, it makes a difference whether you want to follow the holiday periods and times of a guided tour or visit the gardens during opening hours.

The Institut Mémoires de l’édition contemporaine (IMEC) offers a free cultural programme year-round, with conferences, exhibitions, events and visits. Individual offerings vary. This is a different framework for choosing dates than the abbey’s seasonal historical tours: with IMEC, the specific programme on your travel dates matters; for the abbey tours, the holiday period, day of the week and time are decisive.

Getting Around by Bus

Bus routes 20 towards Rots–Bonny and 21 towards Saint-Germain both serve the Ardenne stop. Check the current timetable before travelling, as public transport information may change. A municipal notice mentions work in 2022–2023 to create or renew a pedestrian access route and a shared walking and cycling path near the abbey in Parc Serge Maillard; check the current state before your visit.
