Fontaine-Henry combines architectural history with a landscape whose limestone also shapes the town’s appearance. The Château de Fontaine-Henry, the Église Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité and the Notre-Dame du Val Busnel Chapel each offer a different perspective, alongside the Mue Valley and the château park. Visitors planning a stay will find several cultural, historical and scenic viewpoints that can be deliberately combined.

Château and chapels: reading the building phases

The Château de Fontaine-Henry as it stands today dates largely to building phases undertaken by Jean and Pierre d’Harcourt. They began around 1480 and were completed by the middle of the 16th century. The château is thus shaped by several building phases, rather than a single starting point. The Notre-Dame du Val Busnel Chapel offers a different chronological perspective: it was built in the 13th century at the beginning of the Gothic period and remodelled in the 16th century under Francis I by the architect Blaise Le Prestre. Comparing the two makes different periods of architectural history at the same site easy to see.

Church and protected cultural heritage

The Église Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité is also one of Fontaine-Henry’s notable historic buildings. It has been classified as a Monument historique since 1862; the protection covers the church with the exception of the nave. Inside are Neo-Gothic choir stalls made of oak, which have been protected as movable cultural heritage since 23 November 1978. The church and the choir stalls thus each have their own heritage protection status: one concerns protection of the building, with one specific part expressly excluded; the other applies to a movable furnishing.

Limestone shapes the Mue Valley

Fontaine-Henry lies in the heart of the Mue Valley. Many of the town’s historic buildings are made of Creully limestone. The stone was extracted from underground chambers, many of which can still be seen in the banks on the edge of the village. Here, the connection between building material and landscape is especially tangible: limestone shapes the historic buildings, while the visible chambers are reminders of its extraction. The townscape and the geological background are thus part of a shared discovery of the valley.

A route along the Mue

The “Sur les rives de la Mue” circular route follows the river and passes below limestone cliffs with former quarries that have been converted into mushroom farms. The route also offers the opportunity to visit the old church in Thaon and the Renaissance château, Château de Fontaine-Henry. It thus combines the river, the limestone landscape and two specific cultural attractions. The former quarries add another historical dimension to the route, while the church and château offer different examples of cultural heritage. Visitors who wish to explore these sites together will find a clear thematic connection without conflating their distinct building and local histories.

Château park and practical information

The park at the Château de Fontaine-Henry is an English-style landscape park where visitors can discover local fauna and flora. It also features a plant maze, whose route is suitable for the whole family. The Notre-Dame du Val Busnel Chapel is freely accessible to all visitors to the château park. As access arrangements may change, check the current conditions before your visit. The park landscape, maze and chapel thus remain distinct ways to explore the area.

Free parking is available at the Château de Fontaine-Henry visitor site. Together with the historic buildings and the surrounding landscape, this makes for a stay that can be tailored to an interest in architecture, local history or nature watching.
