The furnishings of the Church of Saint-Taurin shape Englesqueville En Auge’s cultural focus: on the rood beam, Christ, Mary and John are arranged in a fixed spatial order; on the high altar, the Adoration of the Magi is the central motif. Nature and hiking are other interests for visitors. The municipality is part of the continental ZNIEFF Type 1 “La Touques et ses principaux affluents-frayères”, and hiking trails are among its highlighted offerings. Sacred art and nature thus offer distinct themes to consider when planning a stay.

Church Art and Architecture

On the rood beam, Christ stands in the centre, Mary on the north side and John on the south side. These positions make the ensemble’s spatial arrangement clear: a central figure flanked by two distinct sides. To appreciate it, it is therefore important to consider not only who is depicted, but also how the figures are arranged in relation to one another. This layout offers a way into the composition before turning to the other works on the high altar and the statues.

The high altar’s reredos is tripartite and shaped like a canopy. The Adoration of the Magi forms the centre; Saint Eligius and Saint Taurin are depicted on either side. The reredos dates from the 17th century. Its composition invites comparison between the central motif and the two images of saints on either side. Together with the rood beam, it presents a second, differently structured pictorial arrangement: here, a central scene is framed by side paintings.

The statues can also be distinguished by their attributes. Saint Roch is depicted as a pilgrim; beside him, a dog carries a loaf of bread in its mouth, while an angel tends his plague sore. The statue of Saint Louis shows an ermine mantle decorated with fleurs-de-lis, a royal crown and a crown of thorns on his right wrist. Saint Gilles wears a black Benedictine cowl and holds an open book; the hind characteristic of his statue is now missing. The motifs create distinct emphases: Roch’s depiction shows an action, Louis is identified by his clothing and crowns, and Gilles by his religious garb and book.

On the south side of the church, the former location of the Romanesque portal is still visible. This architectural trace complements the interior artworks and broadens the focus from figures and altar to the building itself. If you plan to visit the church, check access in advance.

Nature and Hiking

The connection with nature has two distinct aspects: the ZNIEFF places the municipality within a named inventory, while hiking trails are highlighted as an activity. If you are planning a specific hike, check the route and access conditions before setting out. This helps you choose a trail that suits your actual plans, rather than relying only on the general mention of hiking trails.

Choose Your Focus

If you are particularly interested in sacred art, the rood beam, altar reredos and the different attributes of the saints offer several subjects to explore. For a stay focused on hiking, planning instead starts with a specific route and its conditions. These two interests can give your trip different emphases without requiring any particular order or route.
