Saint-Pierre-Sur-Dives offers several different reasons to stay: Benedictine architectural history, a traditional weekly market, green spaces and a canoe trip on the Dives. The medieval market hall is also part of the market on Monday mornings. You can focus on architecture, the park and the history of plants once cultivated here, or an activity on the river. Check market dates and the availability of individual visitor services to suit your travel dates.
Monday Market and Medieval Market Hall
The traditional market takes place every Monday morning in the medieval market hall, on the market square and beneath the Hallettes. As a recurring municipal event, its schedule may change, so check before your trip whether Monday suits your visit. The market offers an opportunity to discover regional products from Normandy, such as meat, poultry, fish, vegetables and cheese. The selection may vary by season and vendor. The market hall was built on the initiative of the abbey’s monks between the 11th and 16th centuries.
The Benedictine Abbey
The Benedictine Abbey was founded in the 11th century. Its complex includes the abbey church, the cloister courtyard and the convent buildings, including a surviving chapter house. A chapter house was the monastery community’s meeting room. The abbey is considered one of the most complete ensembles of monastic architecture in Normandy. Its founding period, surviving structures and architectural significance offer different points of reference for understanding the site.
The Park and the History of Plants
Parc des Tanneries offers a different focus: in the heart of Saint-Pierre-Sur-Dives, this urban recreation area features biodiversity, walking paths, play areas and sociable spaces to relax. Facilities include parking, toilets, a children’s area and picnic tables. Entry is free seasonally; check in advance whether your travel dates fall within the period of free access.
The Pays d’Auge Conservatory Garden of Flowers and Vegetables focuses on plant cultivation. It tells the story of almost 500 plants once cultivated in the Pays d’Auge, including forgotten vegetable varieties, rare flowers and shrubs, and medicinal, veterinary and magical plants. By comparison, the park focuses on biodiversity and paths, while the garden explores the history of plants once cultivated here.
